Chapter 22 - SHE THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE THEMNina’s statement hurt Daniel most.

Not because it revealed new violence.

Because it revealed Vanessa’s confidence.

“She said Daniel will believe me.”

Nina looked at him apologetically.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“What exactly?”

Nina continued:

“She told Mrs. Hayes, ‘My husband knows who you are. If I tell him you’re unstable, he’ll believe me.’”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Did Vanessa believe that?

Maybe.

Would he have?

Before walking through the door—

possibly.

That truth was unbearable.

He remembered dismissing Eleanor’s vague concerns.

Accepting Vanessa’s explanations.

Trusting convenience.

He told Rebecca:

“I helped her.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“I believed things.”

“You were deceived.”

“I was also absent.”

“That is not abuse.”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

“But absence made it easier.”

Rebecca nodded carefully.

“That is a responsibility you can learn from without taking responsibility for what Vanessa chose.”

That distinction saved him from drowning in guilt.

At the final pretrial hearing, Vanessa tried once more to blame Eleanor.

“She interfered.”

“She undermined me.”

“She wanted Daniel to leave me.”

Daniel watched.

The old story.

Eleanor as problem.

But now everyone in the room had evidence.

The narrative no longer worked.
