Chapter 5 - ELEANOR WON’T TALKEleanor moved temporarily into Daniel’s townhouse near Beacon Hill.

Sophie stayed with them.
Vanessa received supervised contact pending court review.
She was furious.
Daniel didn’t care.
Or told himself he didn’t.
What he cared about was his mother refusing to tell the full story.
“Mom.”
Eleanor sat near the window with tea.
Her bruises had begun turning yellow around the edges.
Daniel hated watching injuries change color.
Proof of time passing.
“You need to tell Rebecca what happened.”
“I told enough.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked tired.
“Daniel.”
“She threatened you.”
“Yes.”
“She threatened Sophie?”
Eleanor’s fingers tightened around the cup.
Daniel saw it.
“Mom.”
“She didn't…”
“What?”
Eleanor looked down.
“She didn't hit Sophie with the bat.”
Daniel felt relief and horror at once.
“With the bat.”
Meaning something else had happened.
“What did she do?”
“Please.”
Daniel stood.
“Why are you protecting her?”
“I’m not.”
“You’re protecting silence.”
Eleanor’s face crumpled.
“I was protecting Sophie.”
Daniel sat again.
“How?”
“Vanessa told me if I accused her, she would tell a judge I was confused.”
“What?”
“She said she had records.”
“What records?”
“Emails. Doctor appointments. Things showing I was forgetful.”
Daniel stared.
His mother occasionally forgot keys.
Names.
Normal things.
Nothing suggesting incapacity.
“She said she’d tell them I was dangerous with Sophie.”
Daniel felt sick.
“She was building something.”
Eleanor nodded.
“And if you believed me…”
“What?”
“She said she would take Sophie and make sure you only saw her under supervision.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She can't just do that.”
“I know that now.”
“Why did you believe her?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because every time I tried to call you, she already knew.”
Daniel remembered Vanessa controlling the household Wi-Fi.
Shared phone plan.
Calendar.
“She monitored you.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor whispered:
“She made everything sound possible.”
That was how coercion worked.
Not necessarily through one credible threat.
Through repetition.
Isolation.
Fear.
Daniel reached across.
“You never have to protect me from the truth.”
Eleanor cried.
“I should’ve called the police.”
“You were scared.”
“I should’ve taken Sophie and left.”
“You didn't know what she would do.”
“I let it go too long.”
Daniel held her hand.
“We stop it now.”
That evening Sophie slept beside Eleanor.
At midnight Daniel passed the bedroom.
He heard movement.
Sophie was sitting upright holding her teddy bear.
She pointed toward the hallway.
“Van…”
Daniel froze.
It was one of the clearest sounds he had heard from her.
“Vanessa?”
Sophie immediately covered her mouth.
Then shook her head violently.
Daniel did not press.
He sat beside her.
“You never have to say anything before you're ready.”
Sophie stared.
Then pointed toward Eleanor’s old phone on the table.
And began shaking.
Daniel looked at it.
The phone itself scared her.
May you like
Which meant Sophie knew what had been recorded.
Maybe she had been there.
