Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN IN THE BURGUNDY SWEATERVanessa attended an interview with investigators wearing gray.

Daniel noticed absurdly.

No burgundy.

No visual connection to the day.

She denied assaulting Sophie.

Denied deliberately striking Eleanor with the bat.

Admitted arguments.

Admitted one slap months earlier.

Called it mutual conflict.

Eleanor had never struck her.

Vanessa claimed she forgot.

Then she looked at Daniel during a break and said:

“You have no witness who can talk.”

Everything stopped.

Her attorney turned sharply.

Daniel stared.

She realized.

Too late.

Rebecca later repeated the sentence to investigators.

Vanessa’s attorney called it an emotional outburst.

Maybe.

But it revealed the logic Daniel had heard on the recording.

Sophie cannot talk.

Therefore Sophie cannot accuse.

Vanessa had built safety around a child’s silence.

That assumption was collapsing.

Because Sophie did not need a courtroom speech.

There were doctors.

Recordings.

Witnesses.

Digital records.

Eleanor.

Nina.

May you like

The bat.

Vanessa had underestimated everyone she considered weaker.
