Chapter 1 - THE SLEEVE ETHAN WASN'T SUPPOSED TO SEEAmelia had less than ten seconds.

She heard the front door downstairs.
Then Ethan's leather work bag hit the entryway table.
Her face went white.
Ryan stood beside the bed, equally frozen.
"What?" he whispered.
Amelia rushed toward him.
"My husband."
Ryan stared at her.
"You said he wouldn't be home until tonight."
"He wasn't supposed to be."
Footsteps sounded below.
Amelia grabbed Ryan's wrist.
"Closet. Now."
He didn't argue.
Ryan stepped into the large walk-in closet attached to the bedroom.
Amelia pulled the door shut.
Almost.
In her panic, she didn't notice the narrow strip of gray fabric caught between the doors.
The sleeve of Ryan's housekeeping uniform.
Visible.
Obvious.
Amelia turned toward the mirror.
Her hair was messy.
She smoothed it quickly.
Her blouse was slightly open at the neck.
She fixed one button.
The bedroom door opened.
Ethan stood there.
Thirty-eight years old.
Still wearing the dark suit trousers and white shirt he'd worn to his morning meeting.
He smiled.
"Surprise."
Amelia forced a laugh.
"Ethan!"
She crossed the room before he could look around.
She threw her arms around him and kissed his cheek.
"You're home early."
"Meeting got canceled."
"That's great."
Too fast.
Too bright.
Ethan noticed nothing.
Not yet.
Amelia kept one hand against his chest.
"Actually, this is perfect. Why don't we go shopping? We can pick up Owen from school, have dinner somewhere downtown."
Ethan smiled.
"Since when do you voluntarily pick restaurants on a Monday?"
She laughed.
"Since my husband surprised me."
Behind them, the closet sleeve remained visible.
Ethan turned slightly.
Amelia moved with him.
Blocking his view.
Almost perfectly.
Then a small voice came from the hallway.
"Dad!"
Six-year-old Owen ran into the room.
Ethan bent down.
"Hey, buddy."
Owen hugged him.
"Why are you home?"
"I live here."
"You said tonight."
"Plans changed."
Owen grinned.
Then his eyes moved beyond his father.
Toward the closet.
He frowned.
Amelia saw it.
Her stomach dropped.
Owen walked past Ethan.
"Mom?"
"What?"
He pointed.
"Whose shirt is that?"
Silence.
Ethan turned.
A strip of gray sleeve hung outside the closet.
Amelia reacted immediately.
"Owen, don't—"
The boy grabbed it.
"Don't pull!"
Too late.
The closet door opened.
Ryan stood inside.
Nobody moved.
Ethan stared at him.
Ryan stared at the floor.
Owen released the sleeve.
"Dad?"
Ethan didn't answer.
His brain couldn't make sense of the image.
Ryan Cole.
Twenty-seven.
The family's housekeeper.
A young man Ethan had trusted enough to give access to the house, his son's rooms, the family schedule.
Standing inside Ethan's bedroom closet.
On a Monday afternoon.
Amelia moved first.
"This isn't what it looks like."
Ethan slowly looked at her.
It was such an absurd sentence that he almost laughed.
"What does it look like?"
"Ethan."
"What does it look like, Amelia?"
Ryan stepped forward.
"I should leave."
"No."
Ethan's voice stopped him.
Not loud.
That made it worse.
"Stay."
Owen's eyes moved nervously between the adults.
Ethan saw him.
Whatever happened next could not happen in front of his son.
"Owen."
The boy looked up.
"Go downstairs."
"But—"
"Put on your headphones. Watch a movie."
"Is Ryan in trouble?"
Ethan swallowed.
"I don't know yet."
Owen hesitated.
Then left.
Ethan waited until he heard the bedroom door downstairs close.
Only then did he turn back.
"Explain."
Amelia crossed her arms.
"Ryan came to help me move some things."
"Into my closet?"
"He heard you coming in and panicked."
Ethan stared at Ryan.
"Why?"
Ryan said nothing.
Amelia answered.
"Because he knew how it would look."
Ethan almost smiled.
"So the innocent explanation is that he hid because he knew hiding would look guilty."
Amelia's jaw tightened.
"Stop twisting everything."
Ethan looked toward the bed.
One pillow had fallen onto the floor.
The comforter was slightly pulled back.
Nothing definite.
Everything suspicious.
He looked at Ryan again.
Then something clicked.
"What are you doing here today?"
Ryan finally raised his eyes.
"I came by."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"You're off Mondays."
Ryan said nothing.
Amelia's expression changed.
Ethan remembered clearly.
The household staffing app.
Ryan had requested Mondays off three months earlier because he took classes.
Ethan had approved it himself.
"You're not working today."
Ryan looked at Amelia.
Just once.
That glance was enough.
Ethan felt something cold enter his chest.
"So why are you in my bedroom?"
Amelia stepped toward him.
"Ethan, calm down."
He looked at her.
"Don't."
She stopped.
"I haven't accused anyone yet."
"Ethan—"
"I'm asking a very simple question."
He looked at Ryan.
"Why are you here on your day off?"
Ryan opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
Ethan turned to Amelia.
She couldn't answer either.
Then Owen appeared again.
He was holding a red toy truck.
"Sorry."
Ethan softened instantly.
"I thought I told you to go downstairs."
"I forgot this."
Owen picked up another toy from beneath the chair.
Then he looked at Ryan.
"Ryan comes here on Mondays sometimes."
The room went silent.
Amelia's face drained of color.
Ethan slowly turned toward his son.
"What did you say?"
Owen shrugged.
"When you're at work."
Amelia cut in.
"Owen doesn't know what day things happen."
The boy frowned.
"Yes, I do."
"Owen."
"He makes pancakes."
Ethan stared.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Owen continued innocently.
"The chocolate ones."
Ethan's heartbeat became heavy.
"How many Mondays?"
Owen thought.
"A lot."
Amelia snapped.
"Enough, Owen."
The boy flinched.
Ethan immediately stepped between them.
"Don't talk to him like that."
Amelia stared.
Ethan looked down at his son.
"Go downstairs, buddy. Really this time."
Owen left.
Ethan waited.
Then he looked at Ryan.
"Leave."
Ryan grabbed his jacket.
Before walking out, he stopped beside Ethan.
His voice was almost inaudible.
"I'm sorry."
Ethan didn't answer.
The front door closed downstairs.
Amelia immediately began talking.
"You can't listen to a six-year-old like he's giving sworn testimony."
Ethan walked toward his desk.
"What are you doing?"
He opened his laptop.
"Ethan."
He logged into the household staffing system.
Ryan's schedule appeared.
Monday.
OFF.
Just as Ethan remembered.
Then he opened the previous week.
Monday.
Off.
The week before.
Off.
He kept going.
Amelia stood behind him.
"What are you looking for?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Three months.
Every Monday marked off.
Then he noticed something.
Ryan's schedule wasn't the only record.
The system also tracked employee door-code entries.
Ethan clicked.
Today's entry:
11:07 A.M. — RYAN COLE CODE USED.
He scrolled backward.
Previous Monday.
10:42 A.M.
Another Monday.
11:19 A.M.
Another.
9:58 A.M.
Ethan stopped breathing.
He counted.
Four.
Seven.
Ten.
Thirteen Mondays.
Ryan had entered Ethan's house thirteen times on days he was officially off.
Ethan slowly turned.
Amelia was no longer trying to explain.
She was staring at the screen.
May you like
And Ethan realized the man in the closet hadn't been the beginning of the betrayal.
It was only the first time he'd come home early enough to see it.
