Chapter 12 - RYAN WASN'T PLANNING TO RUN AWAY WITH AMELIARyan sat across from Amelia.

Ethan remained because the meeting concerned evidence relevant to custody and finances.

Nobody looked comfortable.

Ryan spoke first.

"I never agreed to move in with you."

Amelia laughed bitterly.

"You talked about apartments."

"Because you showed me apartments."

"You said you wanted a life with me."

"I did. At one point."

Ethan felt no jealousy now.

Only exhaustion.

Ryan continued.

"Then I realized your version of Ethan didn't match the person I worked for."

Amelia's eyes flashed.

"You barely know him."

"I was in his house five days a week."

Ethan almost laughed at the terrible irony.

Ryan continued.

"You said he ignored Owen."

"He does."

"No."

Ryan shook his head.

"He called every afternoon when he traveled. He made breakfast on weekends. He changed his schedule for school meetings."

Amelia stared.

"You were supposed to be on my side."

Ryan looked ashamed.

"That was the problem."

Silence.

He continued.

"I started feeling like every conversation had a purpose."

Amelia scoffed.

"You slept with me for over a year."

"Yes."

Ryan looked at Ethan.

"I'm not pretending I'm good."

Then back at Amelia.

"But I didn't sign up to help you build a custody case."

Amelia folded her arms.

"I never asked you to lie."

"You asked me to remember things differently."

That sentence landed.

Ryan gave examples.

If Ethan returned late, Amelia called it abandonment.

If Ethan worked from home behind a closed office door, she called him unavailable.

If Owen cried because Ethan left for a trip, Amelia asked Ryan to write down how distressed he seemed.

"You kept notes?"

Ethan asked.

Ryan nodded.

"At first because Amelia said her lawyer needed a record."

"Where are they?"

Ryan handed his attorney a notebook.

Copies were provided.

Ethan read.

The earliest notes sounded neutral.

Ethan left for airport 6:20 a.m. Owen cried for approximately five minutes.

Later entries changed.

Amelia says Ethan prioritizes work over Owen.

Then:

Asked to note whether Ethan drank at dinner. Two glasses wine.

Then:

Amelia asked if I believe Owen would be happier living primarily with her. I said I don't know.

Ryan looked at Ethan.

"I should've stopped sooner."

"Yes."

"I know."

Amelia laughed.

"You're doing this because you're scared he'll sue you."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"I'm doing it because you wrote future abuse allegations."

She froze.

Ryan had seen them.

"You went through my iPad?"

"You left it open."

"You're unbelievable."

Ryan almost laughed.

"So are you."

The mediator stopped them.

Ryan continued calmly.

"Three weeks ago I told Amelia I wanted to end everything."

"Why then?" Ethan asked.

Ryan looked down.

"She asked me to bruise her."

Silence.

Ethan felt his stomach turn.

"What?"

Ryan's attorney spoke.

"Mr. Cole has preserved the message."

A screenshot appeared.

Amelia:

If Ethan ever sees marks, he'll finally understand what it's like when someone doesn't listen.

Ryan:

What are you talking about?

Amelia:

Forget it.

Then a later voice note.

Amelia laughing nervously:

"I'm not asking you to hurt me. Just saying sometimes evidence makes people believe women."

Ethan looked at her.

Amelia began crying.

"I wasn't serious."

Ryan shook his head.

"That's when I stopped believing that."

"You never touched me."

"No."

"You act like I asked you to beat me."

"I thought you were asking me to create bruises."

Amelia looked at the mediator.

"I was upset. I said stupid things."

The mediator remained neutral.

Ethan felt something important click into place.

Amelia was desperate to make her decision morally clean.

If Ethan looked dangerous, then her affair became escape.

If Ryan could testify.

If photographs showed marks.

If Owen repeated that Dad was scary.

Then Amelia wasn't the woman who betrayed her family.

She was the woman who fled a bad marriage.

Narrative.

Again.

Ethan finally spoke.

"You didn't need me to be violent to leave."

Amelia looked at him.

"I know that now."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You knew it then too."

Her face crumpled.

"You wanted permission to feel innocent."

Silence.

Amelia whispered:

"Maybe."

It was the first time she'd admitted something without defending it.

Ryan looked at her.

"I did love you."

Ethan almost flinched.

Ryan continued.

"But I don't anymore."

Amelia closed her eyes.

"Good."

"I mean it."

"I heard you."

The meeting ended with temporary arrangements.

Owen would alternate time between parents with transitions supervised initially.

Ryan would have no contact with Owen.

All household financial accounts were frozen pending forensic review.

Amelia moved into a rental.

Ethan remained in the family home.

Ryan resigned formally.

That should have ended his role.

It didn't.

Two days later Ethan received a call from the forensic accountant.

"Mr. Carter, we found something unusual."

Ethan almost laughed.

His life had become unusual.

"What?"

"West Coast Home Services wasn't the only company receiving money."

Ethan sat up.

"Another fake vendor?"

"Possibly."

"How much?"

"About $112,000 over two years."

That predated Ryan's return.

"To who?"

The accountant gave the name.

Harbor Child Consulting.

Ethan didn't recognize it.

"What do they do?"

"We can't find a real operating history."

"Owner?"

A pause.

"Amelia Carter."

Ethan stopped breathing.

Two years.

Before Ryan.

Before the affair restarted.

May you like

Amelia had been hiding money long before she brought him into the house.

And the deeper Ethan looked, the less the affair seemed like the beginning of her plan.
