Chapter 8 - OWEN HAD BEEN LISTENING FROM THE HALLWAYEthan picked Owen up from school himself.

The boy climbed into the back seat without his usual energy.
No questions.
No story.
He held his dinosaur backpack on his lap and stared out the window.
Ethan didn't ask anything until they reached the beach.
A small public overlook five minutes from home.
They sat on a bench.
Owen kicked his sneakers against the wood.
"Dad?"
"Yeah."
"Are you mad at Mom?"
Ethan took a breath.
"Mom and I are having a difficult time."
"Because Ryan was in the closet?"
"That's part of it."
Owen looked down.
"Did I make trouble?"
The question hurt more than anything Amelia had done.
"No."
Ethan turned toward him.
"Listen to me. You didn't cause anything."
"But I pulled the shirt."
"You saw something confusing and asked a question."
"Mom said not to."
"I know."
Owen's eyes filled.
"She gets mad when I tell."
Ethan felt cold.
"Tell what?"
Owen shrugged.
"Things."
"What things?"
Ethan hated how carefully he had to walk now.
He didn't want to interrogate his son.
He didn't want to lead him.
"Things that happen when I'm not home?"
Owen nodded.
"Like Ryan?"
Another nod.
"Does Ryan come over a lot?"
"On Mondays."
"Anything else?"
"Sometimes Thursday."
Ethan thought of Ryan's schedule.
Thursdays were workdays.
Nothing unusual.
"Where do you see him?"
"Kitchen."
"Upstairs?"
Owen looked uncomfortable.
Ethan stopped.
"You don't have to answer anything you don't want."
Owen whispered:
"Sometimes."
"Okay."
He waited.
Owen continued himself.
"Mom locks her door."
Ethan's throat tightened.
"Your mom's bedroom?"
"Our bedroom, he almost said.
"Yeah."
"What do you do?"
"Watch TV."
"Does Ryan talk to you?"
"Sometimes."
"Is he nice?"
Owen thought.
"Mostly."
That mattered.
This wasn't about forcing Owen to hate Ryan.
"What did you hear about him living with you?"
Owen's face changed.
"I wasn't spying."
"I know."
"I went to get water."
"Okay."
"Mom said after the big date, we could all stop pretending."
Ethan's heartbeat slowed.
"Big date?"
"May something."
May twenty-second.
The anniversary.
"What did Ryan say?"
"He said, 'What about Ethan?'"
Ethan stared at the ocean.
"And Mom?"
Owen's voice became smaller.
"She said you'd have your own place."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Anything about you?"
"Mom said I would live with her."
"And me?"
Owen looked at him.
"Weekends."
There it was.
A six-year-old had accidentally overheard the custody plan before Ethan knew divorce was even coming.
"What did you think?"
Owen began crying.
"I don't want weekends."
Ethan pulled him close.
"You don't have to solve this."
"I want my room."
"You'll have a room."
"I want you."
Ethan nearly broke.
"You have me."
"Every day?"
Ethan couldn't promise that.
Not honestly.
And he refused to become another adult lying to make things easier.
"I'm going to be in your life every day I can."
Owen cried harder.
"Mom said judges decide."
Ethan's body went cold.
"She told you about judges?"
Owen nodded.
"What did she say?"
"That judges ask kids questions."
Ethan swallowed.
"Did she tell you what to say?"
Owen hesitated.
There it was.
Fear.
Ethan kept his voice soft.
"You won't be in trouble."
"She said if they ask who helps with homework, I say her."
"Does she?"
"Both."
"Anything else?"
"Who makes dinner."
"Who?"
"Mostly Rosa."
Their cook.
Ethan almost smiled despite himself.
"And?"
"She said don't say Rosa."
Ethan looked away.
Amelia had been coaching.
Not dramatically.
Not telling Owen to accuse Ethan of violence.
Small corrections.
Small narratives.
Enough to create a picture.
"Did she say anything bad about me?"
Owen nodded.
"What?"
"That work is your favorite."
Ethan closed his eyes.
That one hit because some days, it might have felt true.
He had missed dinners.
Calls.
School events.
Work had been important.
Too important sometimes.
But there was a difference between failure and abandonment.
"I need to do better."
Owen looked at him.
"At work?"
"At being home."
The boy leaned against him.
Ethan's phone rang.
Ryan.
He ignored it.
Again.
Then a text.
Amelia knows you found the folder. She's asking me to say you threatened her.
Ethan stared.
Another message.
I'm not doing it.
Then:
There's something I need to give you. Not screenshots. The actual recordings.
Ethan looked at Owen.
He couldn't keep dragging his son through adult chaos.
He called his sister, Claire.
She came immediately.
Owen adored her.
Ethan explained only enough for Claire to understand she should not leave Owen alone with Amelia that evening.
Then Ethan drove to meet Ryan.
This time Ryan was waiting in his car near a marina.
He handed Ethan a small flash drive.
"What is it?"
"Voice notes Amelia sent me."
"Why didn't you send them?"
"Some are long."
"What's on them?"
Ryan looked ashamed.
"Her plans."
"For divorce?"
"Yes."
"Custody?"
"Yes."
Ryan hesitated.
"And one thing about you."
Ethan stared.
"What?"
"She wanted me to provoke you."
"How?"
Ryan looked down.
"She thought if you caught us..."
Ethan stopped breathing.
Ryan continued.
"...you might hit me."
The silence became enormous.
"Why would she want that?"
"So she'd have proof you were violent."
Ethan stared at the man who'd been hiding in his closet.
For the first time, the timing of the discovery itself looked different.
"What happened today?"
Ryan's face tightened.
"She knew you might come home early."
Ethan went completely still.
"What?"
Ryan swallowed.
"She got an email about your canceled meeting before you arrived."
Ethan's pulse hammered.
"How long before?"
"Twenty minutes."
"She knew."
"Yes."
"Then why were you still there?"
Ryan looked at him.
"Because she told me we had time."
Ethan felt cold move through his entire body.
Amelia hadn't simply been caught by bad luck.
May you like
There was a chance she'd been waiting for Ethan to catch them.
And the only thing that had gone wrong was Owen opening the closet before Ethan's anger became the scene she needed.
