Chapter 9 - THE DISCOVERY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENTEthan listened to the recordings alone in his car.

Ryan had saved months of Amelia's voice messages.
Some were intimate.
Ethan skipped those.
He didn't need details.
He needed facts.
Then he found one dated two weeks earlier.
Amelia's voice:
"You keep saying Ethan is calm. He's calm because nobody challenges him. If he actually sees us, he'll lose it."
Ryan:
"That's a terrible idea."
Amelia laughed.
"I'm not saying we plan it."
A pause.
"I'm saying if it happens, don't run too fast."
Ethan stopped the recording.
His hands were cold.
He played another.
One week earlier.
Ryan:
"I'm done sneaking in your house."
Amelia:
"May is four months away."
Ryan:
"That's your deadline, not mine."
Amelia:
"If you leave now, everything I've built falls apart."
Ryan:
"What have you built?"
A long pause.
Then Amelia:
"A way out."
Another recording.
Three days before the closet.
Ryan:
"I'm not lying to a judge."
Amelia:
"Nobody asked you to lie."
Ryan:
"You asked me to say Ethan scares Owen."
Amelia:
"I asked whether you'd seen Owen scared."
Ryan:
"Of you."
Silence.
Ethan stopped breathing.
He replayed it.
"Of you."
Amelia's response came sharp.
"Don't start."
Ryan:
"You yell at him when Ethan's away."
Amelia:
"I'm his mother."
Ryan:
"You grabbed him last week."
Ethan's hands tightened.
Ryan continued.
"You left a mark."
Ethan almost dropped the phone.
He immediately called Claire.
"Check Owen's arms."
"What?"
"Please."
Two minutes later Claire called back.
"There's a faint bruise near his upper arm."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Ask him how he got it. Don't suggest anything."
Claire returned five minutes later.
"He said Mom grabbed him because he spilled orange juice."
Ethan's stomach twisted.
Not enough to determine abuse by itself.
Parents grabbed children sometimes.
But with the notebook of fabricated allegations about Ethan, the hypocrisy was staggering.
He called his attorney.
Then a family lawyer.
Then the child counselor.
By evening, Ethan had stopped thinking about saving the marriage.
Now he was thinking about protecting Owen and documenting reality properly.
Not manufacturing it.
Amelia called eighteen times.
He answered on the nineteenth.
"Where's Owen?"
"With Claire."
"You had no right."
"She's his aunt."
"I'm his mother."
"I know."
"Bring him home."
"Not tonight."
Silence.
Then:
"You cannot keep my son from me."
"I'm not."
"That's exactly what you're doing."
"For one night while we sort this out."
"You talked to a lawyer."
Ethan stared.
"How do you know?"
"Because I know you."
"No. Ryan told you."
Silence.
Ethan laughed softly.
"He's still texting you."
"He's scared."
"So am I."
That stopped her.
Ethan continued.
"I heard the recordings."
No answer.
"I heard him say you grabbed Owen."
"Ethan—"
"I heard you ask whether he could say Owen was afraid of me."
"You're twisting it."
"I heard your voice."
"Ryan edited things."
"Did he?"
"Yes."
"Then your lawyer can examine the files."
Amelia's breathing changed.
She hadn't expected that answer.
No yelling.
No threat.
No explosion.
The version of Ethan she'd been preparing to prove wasn't appearing.
"Come home," she said.
"No."
"We need to talk."
"Through attorneys tomorrow."
Her voice broke.
"You're really doing this."
Ethan stared through the windshield at the dark marina.
"No, Amelia."
He felt tears burn for the first time.
"You've been doing this for sixteen months."
She cried.
Maybe real.
Maybe not.
He no longer knew.
"I loved you."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Maybe."
"Don't say maybe."
"Then help me understand love that needs a fake vendor, a hidden lover, fabricated custody notes, and a future abuse allegation."
She couldn't answer.
"Ethan..."
"I'm filing for temporary custody."
Her voice changed instantly.
"What?"
"Not permanent. Temporary."
"You can't."
"I can ask."
"You promised you'd never take Owen."
"I promised nothing like that."
"You said—"
"I am not taking him from you."
He kept his voice calm.
"But until a professional evaluates what he's been hearing and why he's being coached, I want stability."
Amelia screamed:
"YOU'RE PUNISHING ME FOR RYAN!"
Ethan held the phone away.
Then her voice dropped.
"You wanted this."
He stared.
"Wanted what?"
"To make me look unstable."
Ethan almost laughed.
The reversal was astonishing.
Then Amelia said:
"Fine. If you want lawyers, we'll use lawyers."
The call ended.
Ten minutes later Ryan called.
Ethan answered.
"What?"
Ryan sounded panicked.
"She just told me to disappear."
"Meaning?"
"She wants me to leave California."
Ethan frowned.
"Why?"
"She said if I stay, you'll destroy both of us."
"Are you planning to leave?"
"No."
Ryan hesitated.
"There's something else."
Ethan nearly laughed.
There was always something else.
Ryan spoke carefully.
"That fake company."
"West Coast Home Services."
"Yes."
"What about it?"
"I didn't keep most of the money."
Ethan stared.
"You said she gave you forty thousand."
"She did."
"Where's the other thirty?"
Ryan's answer chilled him.
"She had me send it to someone."
"Who?"
"A private investigator."
Ethan's heartbeat changed.
"Investigating what?"
May you like
Ryan paused.
"You."
