Chapter 10 - AMELIA HAD BEEN FOLLOWING ETHAN TOOThe investigator's name was Marcus Vale.

Former police officer.
Private surveillance license.
Office in Santa Monica.
Ethan's attorney confirmed he was legitimate.
What Amelia hired him to do was another question.
Ryan forwarded transfers.
Three payments totaling $28,500.
All from West Coast Home Services.
All ultimately funded by Ethan's household account.
Ethan had unknowingly paid to have himself investigated.
The absurdity would have been funny in another life.
His lawyer obtained enough information through divorce discovery to identify the contract.
Domestic Conduct Investigation.
Start date:
Ten months earlier.
Purpose:
Document subject's travel, social contacts, alcohol consumption, and potentially compromising relationships.
Ethan stared.
Amelia had hired someone to catch him cheating.
He almost admired the projection.
"What did he find?" Ethan asked.
His attorney looked through the preliminary disclosure.
"Nothing significant."
"Nothing?"
"Business dinners. Travel. Two bars after conferences. One lunch with a woman."
Ethan remembered.
His CFO, Rebecca Chen.
Fifty-one.
Married.
Amelia had once joked Ethan talked about Rebecca more than he talked about sports.
"Any affairs alleged?"
"No."
"Any misconduct?"
"No."
Ethan laughed softly.
His attorney continued.
"There's a note saying surveillance was extended because the client was dissatisfied with lack of usable material."
Ethan stopped smiling.
"Dissatisfied."
"Apparently."
"What happened next?"
The investigator began documenting absences.
Work events.
Late returns.
Missed school activities.
Exactly the pattern in Amelia's custody file.
She wasn't merely recording Ethan's schedule herself.
She had paid a professional to build it.
"What did she tell Marcus she needed?"
The attorney looked down.
"Potential divorce and custody litigation."
Ten months.
Amelia had been preparing long before she hired her attorney four months ago.
Ethan felt strangely calm.
The scale of deception was becoming too large for fresh shock.
Then his lawyer found another instruction.
If subject displays aggressive behavior, document immediately. Do not intervene unless safety requires.
Ethan stared.
"Did he ever?"
"No."
"So nothing."
"Correct."
The lawyer hesitated.
"There's one more item."
"Of course."
"The investigator reported seeing Ryan enter your home repeatedly."
Ethan went still.
"When?"
"Seven months ago."
"Did he know who Ryan was?"
"Employee."
"And?"
"Marcus apparently asked Amelia whether she wanted those visits included."
Ethan leaned forward.
"What did she say?"
His attorney read:
Client instructed investigator that Ryan Cole's presence was unrelated and should not appear in reports provided to counsel.
Ethan laughed.
She was paying someone to document Ethan's behavior while actively hiding her lover from the same evidence file.
Then came the worst part.
Marcus had photographs.
One showed Ryan entering Monday morning.
Another showed him leaving three hours later.
Another showed Amelia kissing him beside his car.
Seven months ago.
The investigator had proof.
Amelia simply told him it didn't matter.
Ethan's attorney immediately sought preservation of the full file.
By afternoon, Amelia's lawyer called Ethan's lawyer.
Lisa Kline sounded furious.
Not at Ethan.
At her own client.
Apparently Amelia had never told her about Ryan.
Never disclosed the fake invoices.
Never disclosed the future incident drafts.
Never disclosed coaching Owen.
Lisa withdrew from representing Amelia two days later.
Ethan expected satisfaction.
He felt none.
That evening Owen asked when he could see his mother.
Ethan's chest tightened.
"Tomorrow."
"Why not tonight?"
"Mom and I are figuring out some rules."
"Did she do something bad?"
Ethan sat beside him.
He hated this.
Children wanted simple categories.
Good.
Bad.
Heroes.
Villains.
"Mom made some choices that hurt people."
Owen thought.
"Like Ryan?"
"Yes."
"Is Ryan bad?"
Ethan paused.
"Ryan made bad choices too."
"Are you bad?"
That surprised him.
"I've made bad choices."
"Like what?"
Ethan smiled sadly.
"Working too much."
Owen frowned.
"That's not bad."
"It can hurt people if I don't pay attention."
"Did you hurt Mom?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Sometimes, probably."
The boy looked worried.
"Did you make her like Ryan?"
There it was.
The question Ethan had been afraid Amelia might plant.
"No."
He answered carefully.
"Mom made her own choice about Ryan."
Owen nodded slowly.
"I miss her."
"You should."
The boy looked surprised.
"You're not mad?"
"At you? Never."
"No. That I miss Mom."
Ethan pulled him close.
"She's your mom."
Owen leaned against him.
Love didn't disappear because adults failed.
That night Amelia came for a supervised visit arranged through attorneys.
Claire remained nearby.
Ethan stayed in another room.
He heard Owen run to Amelia.
"Mom!"
Then crying.
Both of them.
For a moment Ethan felt terrible.
Then he reminded himself temporary boundaries were not revenge.
After an hour, Amelia left.
Claire came into the kitchen.
"She was good with him."
Ethan nodded.
"I know she loves him."
Claire studied him.
"That makes this harder."
"Yeah."
His phone buzzed.
An email from Marcus Vale.
The private investigator.
Subject:
You should see the last week of surveillance.
Ethan opened it.
Marcus explained Amelia had terminated surveillance six months earlier.
Then unexpectedly restarted it two weeks ago.
Only one instruction:
Monitor Ethan's return times from work.
Ethan's pulse changed.
Two weeks ago.
Just before the closet discovery.
The attached report showed Ethan's movements.
Monday morning meeting.
Flight cancellation.
Office departure.
Marcus had notified Amelia at 1:46 p.m.:
Subject leaving office early. ETA residence 2:20.
Ethan had arrived at 2:18.
Amelia knew.
More than thirty minutes before he opened the bedroom door.
Ryan had claimed twenty minutes.
It was actually thirty-two.
Enough time for Ryan to leave easily.
Instead, he was still upstairs.
Hiding.
Ethan read the final message Amelia sent Marcus:
Do not follow him inside. I can handle the rest.
Ethan stared at those words.
The discovery had not been accidental.
At least not entirely.
Amelia had known exactly when Ethan was coming.

The question now wasn't whether she'd expected him to find Ryan.
It was what she had hoped Ethan would do after he did.
