Chapter 11 - AMELIA NEEDED ETHAN TO LOSE CONTROLMarcus agreed to meet.

Unlike Ryan, he looked Ethan directly in the eye.
"I should've questioned the assignment sooner."
"You were hired to follow me."
"Legal."
"Did Amelia ever ask you to provoke me?"
"No."
"Did she tell you Ryan was her lover?"
"No."
"What did you think he was doing?"
Marcus paused.
"I suspected."
"Why not report it?"
"She was the client."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps finding technical reasons not to tell the truth."
Marcus accepted that.
Then he opened his tablet.
"The last two weeks changed."
"How?"
"She asked specifically about your temper."
"Did you tell her I had one?"
"I told her I'd never documented violence."
"Then?"
"She asked what happens when men discover infidelity."
Ethan felt cold.
"Exact words?"
Marcus checked notes.
Client asked whether discovery of a spouse with another partner commonly produces physical confrontation.
Ethan stared.
"What did you say?"
"That sometimes it does."
"Then?"
"She asked whether a private investigator could testify about such an event if he witnessed it."
Ethan leaned back.
"She wanted a witness."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"That's what I think now."
Ethan looked toward the window.
The plan became clearer.
Amelia knew he was coming.
Ryan stayed.
Maybe she expected Ethan to walk in on something more obvious.
Maybe Ryan was supposed to run.
Maybe Ethan would grab him.
Punch him.
Shove Amelia.
Anything.
Then Marcus could document it from outside or be called afterward.
A violent husband.
A frightened wife.
Custody leverage.
Prenup leverage.
A cleaner exit.
Except Owen entered first.
He saw the sleeve.
He opened the closet.
The scene became confusing instead of explosive.
And Ethan didn't hit anyone.
"What happened to Marcus Monday?" Ethan asked.
"I was parked two blocks away."
"You saw me arrive."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you come closer?"
"Amelia told me not to."
"After?"
"She texted once."
Marcus showed him.
2:24 p.m.
Not useful. Leave.
Ethan stared.
Not useful.
His son had just found a man hiding inside his parents' closet.
His marriage had exploded.
And Amelia's message to the investigator was:
Not useful.
Because Ethan hadn't become violent.
He felt something colder than anger.
"Will you provide this to attorneys?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Marcus looked ashamed.
"Because the job stopped being surveillance and started looking like entrapment."
Ethan nodded.
That word fit.
Not legally perhaps.
Emotionally.
Amelia had created a trap.
And Ethan's restraint had ruined it.
When he confronted her through a mediated meeting three days later, Amelia denied planning anything.
A family-law mediator sat between them.
Attorneys on both sides.
Ethan didn't raise his voice.
"Did you know I was coming home?"
Amelia stared at the table.
"Yes."
"Why didn't Ryan leave?"
"I asked him to."
Ryan's recordings contradicted that.
Ethan played one.
Amelia's voice:
"Stay ten minutes. He won't be here yet."
Timestamp:
2:07.
Eleven minutes before Ethan arrived.
The mediator looked at Amelia.
She cried.
"I was confused."
Ethan didn't respond.
"Did you want me to catch him?"
"No."
"Did you think I might?"
"Maybe."
"Did you expect me to hit him?"
"No."
Marcus's notes were placed on the table.
Her face changed.
Ethan continued.
"You asked whether an investigator could testify if I became violent."
"I was scared of you."
"When have I hit you?"
"Never."
"When have I threatened you?"
"You punch walls."
Ethan froze.
Once.
Four years earlier.
An argument over his father's illness.
Ethan had struck the garage wall.
He had apologized.
Gone to therapy.
Never repeated it.
He hated that moment.
Amelia knew.
"Four years ago."
"You scared me."
"I believe you."
That answer surprised her.
Ethan continued.
"But being afraid of something I once did doesn't justify trying to recreate it."
Her face crumpled.
"I needed people to understand you weren't perfect."
"I never said I was."
"You always look perfect."
Ethan stared.
There it was again.
The same theme.
Image.
Control.
Narrative.
Amelia didn't simply want out.
She needed Ethan to become the villain so she didn't have to be the person who cheated and lied.
"If you'd told me you wanted a divorce, I would've been hurt."
Ethan's voice broke slightly.
"But we would've survived it."
Amelia looked at him.
"You don't know that."
"No."
"I thought you'd hate me."
"I do hate some of what you did."
She cried.
"Exactly."
"But I wouldn't have taken Owen because you stopped loving me."
Silence.
"You never gave me the chance to be decent."
Amelia covered her face.
For the first time, Ethan felt grief for her too.
Not enough to return.
Not enough to forgive.
But enough to understand fear had been underneath many of her choices.
Then her attorney spoke.
"We should discuss temporary custody."
Amelia immediately looked up.
"I want Owen home."
The mediator said:
"Shared temporary time is likely unless there is a direct safety concern."
Amelia turned to Ethan.
He expected a fight.
Instead she whispered:
"Please don't take him."
Ethan stared.
"I'm not."
Her eyes widened.
"I want fifty-fifty once the counselor believes he's ready."
Her lawyer looked relieved.
Ethan continued.
"But no Ryan around him."
Amelia stiffened.
"Ryan and I are over."
Ethan looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
She didn't answer.
Then a new voice came from the doorway.
Ryan.
He had been waiting outside with his own attorney.
He looked directly at Amelia.
"We were over three weeks ago."
Amelia's face hardened.
Ryan continued.
May you like
"You just wouldn't let me leave."
And suddenly another part of their relationship was about to come apart.
