SUNNY KNEW WHERE SHE WAS / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - DECLAN WASN’T THE TARGETFinancial forensic review found Nolan’s motive.

His development company, Wexler Coastal Ventures, had failed on two projects.

Interest rates rose.

Partner sued.

Debt.

Nolan borrowed against personal assets.

He did not legally pledge Elise trust, but represented family property access as support.

Marriage would trigger independent trustee and remove Nolan’s authority to direct Elise-share investments.

Lenders could discover reduced control.

He feared insolvency.

Declan was not true target.

Elise’s marriage was.

He could have told Elise.

Maybe she help? She would not use trust perhaps but negotiate.

He chose manipulation.

Why?

Shame.

Margot family culture:

competence.

image.

Nolan had been golden son.

Could not admit failure.

So he framed Declan threat.

Margot believed because it protected image of Nolan.

Family system.

Elise met Nolan once with attorneys/mediator.

“You needed money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Six million?”

He looked.

“Mom told.”

“She should.”

“I was going fix.”

“With my trust?”

“No.”

“With time.”

“Marriage reduced your time.”

“Yes.”

“So Poppy.”

He cried.

“I never thought Theresa would restrain.”

“You told her keep Poppy out until search.”

“Yes.”

“You used my daughter.”

He covered face.

“Yes.”

“Why not ask me delay wedding?”

“You would ask why.”

“Correct.”

“And I’d have to tell debt.”

“So protecting pride.”

“Yes.”

Elise stood.

“I hope you get help.”

“I don’t want contact.”

He nodded.

“What about Poppy?”

“You do not ask her.”

His face broke.

He loved niece.

Still consequence.

“When can I—”

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe she decides later.”

He accepted.

No family entitlement.

Declan wasn’t target.
