Chapter 6 - THE ENGAGEMENT MARGOT WANTED STOPPEDDeclan Shaw proposed on a rainy Tuesday six months before party.

No photographer.

No orchestra.

They were in kitchen.

Poppy coloring at table.

Declan asked Elise to pass salt.

Then gave ring box instead.

Elise laughed for full minute.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

Poppy looked up.

“Is that a princess ring?”

Declan:

“No, terrifying adult ring.”

Elise said yes.

Poppy asked:

“Can I wear?”

“No.”

“Rude.”

Family loved story except Margot.

She smiled when told.

Then privately:

“Don’t rush.”

They had dated three years.

“Mom.”

“Marriage changes things.”

“Yes.”

“Cedarwick.”

“Not marrying house.”

“Declan understands assets.”

“He understands I have assets.”

“He has own.”

Margot distrusted.

Declan, thirty-six, architect specializing historic preservation, came from comfortable but not dynastic Charleston family.

He had never asked Elise for money.

He had asked for prenuptial agreement.

That should reassure.

Instead Margot assumed strategic.

He also challenged Cedarwick security renovation:

side gate old.

garage cameras absent.

electrical system.

Margot resented criticism.

After proposal, lawyers reviewed Elise’s trust.

Created by late father Graham Wexler.

Marriage triggered independent trustee mechanisms intended protect Elise from family interference and spouse influence alike.

Ironically safety.

Nolan disliked because he managed family holdings collectively and drew management fees.

He told Margot:

“Declan’s lawyers are trying cut us out.”

They were executing trust.

Margot listened to son.

Then Theresa.

Background found nothing.

She escalated.

She admitted.

Elise later told Declan:

“Original target was you.”

“I know.”

“How feel?”

“Flattered.”

She glared.

He smiled.

“If your family is willing stage child disappearance to prove I’m careless, I prefer not take ego bait.”

“Good.”

He also felt guilt:

Had he installed cameras against Margot objections maybe Poppy found sooner.

Elise stopped.

“No.”

“Still.”

“Don’t become Mom reverse. You don’t control everything.”

He nodded.

This story taught everyone control limits.

Engagement paused—not canceled.

Not because Margot succeeded.

Because Elise needed emotional space.

Declan:

“I’m here.”

No deadline.

Margot’s plan technically achieved delay.

That made Elise furious.

She told therapist:

“If I postpone wedding, she wins.”

Therapist:

“Marriage timing cannot be punishment/reward to Margot.”

“Choose for you.”

So Elise refused rush just to defy.

Agency.

Poppy remained safe.

She still liked Declan.

Called him “D.”

No issue.

Margot lost unsupervised access temporarily.

That was not revenge.

Safety.

Elise explained:

“Grandma made bad grown-up decision.”

“You can see when Mommy says.”

Poppy asked:

“Is Grandma jail?”

“No.”

“Did she make lady?”

Elise:

“She made choices that helped lady come.”

“Police are figuring rest.”

Truth without leading.

The engagement Margot wanted stopped became background.

The real family fracture was trust.

Would Elise ever let mother arrange birthday again?

Unknown.

Would Declan marry into family where brother used child to protect debt?

He said:

“I’m marrying you, not them.”

Elise:

“Package complicated.”

May you like

“Yes.”

He stayed.
