Chapter 4 - THE LAST PERSON WHO SAW POPPYBefore the video, everyone believed the last family member to see Poppy was Elise.

She had kissed her daughter's forehead near cake table at 8:58.
“I need five minutes.”
Poppy said:
“Can I have frosting?”
“After candles.”
“You always say after.”
“Because you always ask before.”
Poppy laughed.
Then ran toward balloons.
Three minutes later, the event photographer captured Poppy in background near garden arch.
At 9:02, guest video captured Tamsin kneeling.
Then walking with her.
At 9:03, another photograph changed timeline.
A cousin had taken panoramic shot of family.
In far background, Margot stood at stone path.
And beside her:
Nolan.
Both looking toward garage direction.
Margot had told police she was on terrace then.
Lie.
Nolan had said checking pool area.
Lie.
Detectives confronted separately.
Margot admitted:
“I met Nolan on path.”
“Why?”
“He said Tamsin had arrived.”
“Were you watching Poppy?”
“I saw her with woman.”
“Did you intervene?”
Margot’s voice broke.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought it was test.”
There.
She saw stranger leading granddaughter.
Believed planned.
Allowed.
“What did you think would happen?”
“I thought they’d take her around corner for two minutes.”
“Then Declan’s security would fail to notice.”
“She’d be returned.”
“Elise would realize danger.”
Officer:
“Did you consider Poppy’s fear?”
Margot cried.
“I thought Tamsin would make it game.”
This was damning.
Even if no restraint anticipated, using child in staged disappearance without parent consent is serious.
Margot had minimized.
Nolan’s interview worse.
He denied being on path until photograph.
Then:
“I was talking to Mom.”
“About Tamsin?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hire?”
“No.”
“Credential?”
“My assistant handled because Mom asked.”
Phone records suggested Nolan and Tamsin texted directly twelve times in prior week.
He claimed:
“Logistics.”
Police preserved.
Elise learned and felt betrayal stacking.
Margot had seen Poppy led away and said nothing.
Not because she wanted kidnapping.
Because she wanted lesson.
Elise confronted via supervised meeting eventually? Not yet.
She wrote:
You watched.
Margot:
I thought she was safe.
Elise:
You had no right to decide.
No answer.
Poppy’s child interview gave another clue.
“Lady said Uncle Nolan knows game.”
Rachel asked:
“What did she say exactly?”
Poppy:
“She said Uncle Nolan picked best hiding place.”
Elise nearly vomited hearing.
Was that true?
Or Tamsin using names to reassure?
Could be.
Police did not tell Nolan immediately.
They needed digital.
The last person to see Poppy before Tamsin:
Margot and Nolan both.
Not touching.
Observing.
This shifted family.
Relatives stopped speaking to Margot.
Some attacked Nolan.
Elise asked everyone:
“Stop texting theories.”
“Police.”
She protected Poppy from family mob.
Cedarwick House became empty.
Birthday decorations removed by professional team after evidence clearance.
Sunny returned daily to garage and sniffed bin area until it was removed by police.
He whined.
Elise stopped taking him there.
Poppy asked:
“Sunny found me?”
“Yes.”
“He good boy.”
“The best.”
She gave him a yellow bow again.
Healing can reclaim objects.
At night, Poppy dreamed lady.
Not grandmother.
Lady.
Important.
Elise kept distinction.
Margot responsible for creating dangerous setup.
But direct actor maybe Tamsin.
Nolan’s role uncertain.
Elise’s fiancé Declan became target of original test, but he refused center.
“This isn’t about proving I’m good.”
“It’s about Poppy.”
Good.
He delayed wedding conversation indefinitely.
No pressure.
Elise asked:
“Are you angry at my mother?”
“Yes.”
“At Nolan?”
“Yes.”
“At me?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“You did not know.”
She cried.
Guilt still.
Parents blame selves.
He said:
“You were sixty feet away at party. That is not negligence.”
She needed.
Police located Tamsin’s rental car two days later at Charleston airport garage.
She had not flown.
Car contained:
black event blouse.
fake credential supplies.
receipt for prepaid phone.
No signs Poppy harmed there.
Where Tamsin?
Hotel footage showed she checked out morning of party before event.
Then vanished.
But not far perhaps.
Her real identity emerged:
Tamsin Reed actually Theresa Mallory, forty-one, former private investigator whose license lapsed after complaint.
She had used multiple professional aliases.
Police broadened search.
Then Nolan’s bank records, obtained with warrant, revealed $18,000 transfer to company tied to Theresa.
Margot paid $8,000 separately.
Two clients.
Same woman.
May you like
The question was no longer whether Nolan knew.
It was why he paid more than twice his mother.
