## Chapter 1 — The Glass of Orange Juice

Brooks Manor stood along the waterfront in Palm Beach, Florida, where towering palm trees swayed gently in the warm afternoon breeze. From the outside, the mansion looked like the perfect home of a wealthy American family. White marble columns framed the entrance, expensive sports cars filled the driveway, and fresh flowers decorated every corner of the estate.

Visitors admired the Brooks family.

They admired the luxury.

The elegance.

The success.

No one imagined the quiet nightmare unfolding behind those beautiful walls.

Seventy-six-year-old Helen Brooks sat alone beside the living room windows in an elegant wheelchair.

Only two years earlier, she had been the heart of the family.

She organized charity events.

Hosted holiday dinners.

Remembered every employee's birthday.

After suffering a severe stroke, everything changed.

Her body became weak.

Her speech became slurred.

She could no longer walk without assistance.

But her mind remained perfectly clear.

She understood every conversation.

Every insult.

Every lie.

Every act of cruelty.

Most afternoons, her only comfort came from Emma Carter.

Emma had worked for the Brooks family for nearly twenty years.

She wasn't simply a housekeeper anymore.

She had become Helen's closest friend.

She patiently helped Helen eat.

Read books aloud.

Played Helen's favorite piano music.

Most importantly...

She treated Helen like a human being.

Victoria Brooks never did.

Victoria had married Daniel Brooks less than eighteen months earlier.

She was beautiful.

Elegant.

Always perfectly dressed.

To neighbors and charity committees, she looked like the ideal daughter-in-law.

Inside Brooks Manor...

She barely hid her resentment.

She hated caring for Helen.

She hated slowing down her luxurious lifestyle.

More than anything...

She hated waiting for the family fortune she believed should already belong to her.

That afternoon, Emma stepped into the kitchen to answer a delivery at the back entrance.

"I'll only be gone for a minute, Mrs. Brooks."

Helen blinked gently to reassure her.

The moment Emma disappeared...

Victoria walked into the living room carrying a silver serving tray.

On it rested a crystal glass filled with fresh orange juice.

She stopped directly in front of Helen.

Her smile instantly disappeared.

"I'm tired of your games."

Helen slowly shook her head.

Victoria leaned closer.

"The doctor said you need vitamins."

Helen tried to move her wheelchair backward.

She couldn't.

Victoria grabbed the handles.

"No more refusing."

She lifted the crystal glass toward Helen's lips.

Helen turned her face away.

Orange juice spilled onto her sweater.

Victoria's patience snapped.

"Drink it!"

She grabbed Helen's chin with surprising force.

Helen's frightened eyes filled with tears.

She couldn't scream.

She couldn't call for help.

She could only pray someone would return before it was too late.
