## Chapter 8 — The Doctor's Shocking Report

The laboratory report arrived the following morning.

Daniel opened the envelope inside his office.

His heart pounded.

The report was only two pages long.

He immediately read the conclusion.

**The beverage contains an excessive concentration of prescription sedatives.**

Daniel froze.

The dosage wasn't lethal.

But according to the toxicologist...

It was powerful enough to leave an elderly stroke patient unconscious for several hours.

There was another sentence.

Repeated exposure may significantly increase the risk of respiratory complications.

Daniel immediately called Helen's physician.

Dr. Richard Collins arrived within the hour.

After reviewing the report, his expression darkened.

"This wasn't an accident."

Daniel quietly asked,

"What would have happened if my mother drank the entire glass?"

The doctor answered honestly.

"With her medical condition..."

"It could have placed her life in serious danger."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He wasn't investigating family conflict anymore.

He was investigating possible attempted harm.

As the doctor prepared to leave, he paused.

"There is something else."

Daniel looked up.

"I've been prescribing only thirty sedative tablets each month."

"But according to your pharmacy records..."

"Someone has requested three emergency refills."

Daniel frowned.

"My mother never needed that much medication."

The doctor nodded.

"I know."

"So who did?"
