## Chapter 16 — Emma Receives an Unexpected Gift

A week after Victoria left Brooks Manor, Daniel invited Emma into his father's old study.

She looked uneasy.

"Did I do something wrong, Mr. Brooks?"

Daniel smiled for the first time in weeks.

"No."

"You've done everything right."

Benjamin Lawson stood beside him holding a small leather folder.

"Helen asked us to wait until the court case was over."

Emma looked confused.

Benjamin handed her the folder.

Inside was a notarized letter signed by Helen Brooks.

Emma slowly began reading.

> Emma,
>
> You came into this house as an employee.
>
> You became my friend.
>
> When I couldn't defend myself...
>
> You became my voice.
>
> No amount of money can repay that kindness.
>
> But I hope this reminds you that goodness is never forgotten.

Emma turned the page.

It was the deed to a beautiful cottage overlooking the ocean, only a few miles from Brooks Manor.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"I... I can't accept this."

Helen slowly wheeled herself forward.

With trembling hands, she gently touched Emma's arm.

"You... already... did."

Her words were still slow, but clear enough.

Daniel smiled.

"My mother insisted."

"And honestly..."

"I couldn't think of anyone who deserved it more."

Emma broke down in tears.

For twenty years, she had served the Brooks family without expecting anything in return.

Now she realized...

Kindness had finally found its way back to her.
