Chapter 10 - “SHE’S NOT MY TEACHER”The child advocacy interview took place on a Monday.

Owen and Claire were not in the room.

That was deliberate.

A trained forensic interviewer named Samantha Brooks sat with Milo.

Toys nearby.

Neutral room.

No uniforms.

The session lasted less than forty minutes.

When Milo came out, he wanted crackers.

Claire cried in the bathroom afterward.

Not because she knew what he had said.

Because he was three years old and had needed a forensic interview.

Owen waited with Detective Chen.

“What did he say?”

Chen could not provide everything.

But she gave them enough.

Milo identified Willowbrook.

The blue room.

Caroline.

He did not describe every mark.

He said Miss Caroline “makes bad boys quiet.”

He said she had “the brown thing.”

Owen’s stomach turned.

Chen did not interpret the phrase.

Neither did the interviewer.

They would not lead him.

Milo also repeated:

“If tell Daddy, police take him.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Owen stared at the floor.

“Did he say she did that?”

“His statements will be documented exactly.”

“That's not an answer.”

“It’s the answer I can give.”

Owen stood.

Claire touched his arm.

He sat again.

Chen continued.

“Milo also corrected the interviewer when she called Caroline his teacher.”

Claire remembered the bedroom.

“What did he say?”

“She’s not my teacher. She’s teacher boss.”

Exactly what he had told Claire.

Consistent.

Unprompted.

Owen exhaled.

“Is that enough?”

“For what?”

“To arrest her.”

“Not yet.”

He almost exploded.

Chen lifted a hand.

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.”

“I do.”

“How?”

“My job is full of parents sitting where you’re sitting.”

That stopped him.

Chen continued.

“I need a case that survives contact with a defense attorney.”

Owen looked away.

“You want fast.”

“Yes.”

“I want strong.”

Claire nodded.

“Strong.”

The investigation deepened.

Caroline was placed on administrative leave.

Willowbrook called it voluntary.

Parents called it suspension.

Marla released a statement:

We remain confident in our staff and committed to facts over speculation.

Claire read it.

Facts.

The same institution that altered Milo’s file was asking for facts.

A week later, Jenna was fired.

Reason:

Violation of confidentiality.

Her attorney called Claire immediately.

“They're punishing her.”

Owen’s face went dark.

“What can we do?”

“Let her lawyer handle it.”

“That's all?”

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“We remember who spoke.”

Jenna had lost the job she loved because she had finally told the truth.

Willowbrook thought that would scare others.

Instead, within three days, a former teaching assistant contacted Detective Chen.

Her name was Rachel Dunn.

She had worked at Willowbrook two years earlier.

Her message contained one sentence:

I once opened the blue room door when Caroline was inside with a crying child, and I have hated myself ever since.
