Chapter 16 - WHY MARLA PROTECTED HERThomas Voss resigned from Willowbrook’s board the morning investigators requested his financial records.

Caroline’s brother had served for nine years.

He chaired the risk committee.

He had also overseen internal complaints involving his sister.

The conflict was obvious.

The board claimed nobody realized.

No one believed them.

Thomas’s investment firm had provided Willowbrook with financing for its planned expansion.

If Caroline became the center of an abuse scandal, that project could collapse.

Marla’s position became clearer.

Protect Caroline.

Protect Thomas.

Protect financing.

Protect Willowbrook.

Protect herself.

A series of emails showed Thomas repeatedly asking Marla to “handle concerns quietly.”

One related to Ava.

Another Lucas.

A third unidentified child.

Thomas wrote:

We cannot allow overreactive parents to undermine staff credibility.

Marla replied:

Understood.

Claire stared at the messages.

“Overreactive.”

Owen said nothing.

Rebecca continued reading.

Another email from Caroline herself:

Jenna is becoming emotionally attached to Hartley. She questions interventions in front of staff.

Marla:

I’ll speak with her.

The date was nine days before Milo’s nightmare.

Owen stood.

“She knew.”

Claire looked at him.

“She knew Jenna was worried.”

“She knew Caroline complained because Jenna was questioning her.”

“Yes.”

“And she still sent Milo back.”

Claire shut her eyes.

“Yes.”

Owen walked outside.

For months afterward he would remember that moment.

Not as the moment he became angriest.

As the moment his anger became useless.

There was no single person to punch.

No door to kick down.

There was a system.

Emails.

Boards.

Policies.

People making small cowardly choices.

You could not fight that with fists.

You needed evidence.

Witnesses.

Patience.

May you like

Everything Owen hated.

So he learned.
