Chapter 22 - MARLA’S CHOICEMarla eventually faced an administrative hearing.

Owen attended.
Claire almost didn’t.
Then changed her mind.
She wanted to see the woman who had once told her there was no blue room.
Marla looked smaller than Claire remembered.
Her attorney emphasized decades of service.
Awards.
Scholarships.
Hundreds of happy families.
All true.
Then Jenna’s email appeared on a screen.
Milo returned from behavior time visibly frightened…
Marla looked down.
The panel asked:
“Why did you not suspend behavioral sessions pending review?”
“I trusted Ms. Voss.”
“Why?”
“Her qualifications.”
“Was her brother’s board role a factor?”
“No.”
“Was enrollment renewal a factor?”
Marla hesitated.
“No.”
Then the email appeared:
Especially not before enrollment renewal season.
Silence.
Owen felt no triumph.
Only disgust.
Later he was permitted to give a victim-impact statement.
He had written six pages.
He used one.
He looked directly at Marla.
“How many children were worth your reputation?”
Marla’s face changed.
Her lawyer objected.
The panel allowed Owen to continue.
He did not shout.
“My son was three.”
Marla looked down.
“Jenna told you she was worried.”
Silence.
“You didn't need proof to ask a question.”
Owen’s voice tightened.
“You only needed to care more about a child than about being wrong.”
He sat.
That was all.
Marla ultimately lost her professional role and faced separate consequences related to falsified records and obstruction.
She had not physically injured Milo.
Owen made sure he never said she had.
But she had been given chances to stop harm.
She chose the institution.
Again.
And again.
May you like
And again.
That was her responsibility.
