Chapter 9 - MISS CAROLINECaroline Voss finally appeared for an interview accompanied by two attorneys.

She wore a beige sweater.

Minimal makeup.

Soft voice.

Everything about her seemed designed to contradict the image of someone who could frighten a child.

Owen did not attend.

Neither did Claire.

Detective Chen later summarized only what she was permitted to share.

Caroline denied ever hitting Milo.

Denied threatening him.

Denied inappropriate discipline.

She acknowledged working with him in the sensory room.

“For emotional regulation.”

“How?”

Breathing.

Quiet sitting.

Sensory toys.

Choices.

Nothing more.

Then Chen showed Caroline a photograph of the marks.

According to Chen, Caroline stopped talking.

Only for several seconds.

Then asked for a break.

Owen seized on that.

“She reacted.”

“People react to injuries.”

“You believe her?”

Chen’s expression remained neutral.

“My job isn't to believe. It’s to establish facts.”

Owen hated that answer less than he used to.

Facts were beginning to accumulate.

Another child.

Another complaint.

Deleted footage.

Edited records.

Protected relationships.

At home, Claire printed a page of Willowbrook staff photographs.

Not to question Milo.

She needed names for herself.

The sheet remained face-down on the kitchen counter.

Milo walked in with apple slices.

He climbed onto a chair.

The page shifted.

Caroline’s photograph became visible.

Milo saw it.

His body changed instantly.

Shoulders up.

Face down.

He slid from the chair.

“Mommy.”

Claire turned.

Milo ran to her.

She held him.

“What happened?”

He pointed.

Claire looked.

Caroline.

She did not ask, “Did she hurt you?”

Instead:

“Do you want me to put that away?”

“Yes.”

Claire turned the page over.

Milo relaxed slightly.

Owen saw the entire exchange.

He stepped outside because he needed air.

Claire found him by the garage.

“That was spontaneous.”

“I know.”

“He saw her.”

“I know.”

Owen punched nothing.

He wanted to.

Instead he pressed both palms to the brick wall.

“I keep thinking about him alone with her.”

Claire stood beside him.

“So do I.”

“I want to know exactly what happened.”

“You might never know exactly.”

Owen looked at her.

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

That night Milo woke once.

Not screaming.

Just calling.

“Mommy?”

Claire entered.

He lifted the blanket.

“Stay.”

She lay beside him.

After a few minutes he whispered:

“Miss Caroline not teacher.”

Claire’s pulse changed.

She kept her voice soft.

“Okay.”

“She boss teacher.”

Claire remembered.

Assistant Director.

Behavior support.

“Okay.”

Milo turned toward her.

“She says listen.”

Claire nodded.

“Grown-ups can ask you to listen.”

Milo’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Even bad?”

Claire answered carefully.

“Nobody is allowed to hurt you.”

Milo went silent.

Then:

“Even Miss Caroline?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Even Miss Caroline.”

The boy stared.

It seemed like a new rule.

One nobody had explained before.

He whispered:

“Okay.”

May you like

Within minutes he fell asleep.

Claire remained awake.
