Chapter 1 - HIS FACE IN THE WATER

Noah Bennett heard Vanessa’s heels before he saw her.

Three slow clicks across the marble floor.

Then silence.

He stood beside the aquarium with both hands pressed against his pale-blue sweater, staring at the bright tropical fish moving through the water as if nothing in the room had changed.

Vanessa stopped behind him.

“Where were you last night?”

Noah did not turn.

“In bed.”

“You’re lying.”

His shoulders tightened.

Seven years old, and already he had learned something Ethan Bennett had not:

Vanessa’s voice became softer when she was most dangerous.

“I wasn’t.”

“Then why were you in the hallway?”

“I wanted water.”

Vanessa moved closer.

Noah could smell her perfume.

“You heard my phone call.”

He shook his head too quickly.

“No.”

“Look at me.”

He didn’t.

Vanessa gripped the back of his sweater near the shoulder.

Noah stiffened.

“What did you hear?”

“Nothing.”

Her control cracked.

In one sudden movement, she forced his face briefly into the aquarium water.

Once.

Only a moment.

Then she pulled him back immediately.

Noah gasped and coughed.

Water ran down his cheeks and chin.

He remained standing.

Fully conscious.

Terrified.

“Stop… please.”

Vanessa leaned close.

“Then learn to obey me.”

Noah’s breathing came fast.

“You don’t get to wander around this house listening to things that don’t concern you.”

“I’m telling Dad.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Amusement.

She stepped back and smoothed her dress.

“If your father asks, you fell.”

Noah stared at her.

“I’m not lying for you.”

“Go ahead.”

She smiled.

“Tell him.”

Noah’s eyes filled.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Who do you think he’ll believe?”

She let the question sit.

“You?”

Then:

“Or his wife?”

The front door opened.

Both of them froze.

A travel bag dropped softly against the entryway floor.

“Noah?”

Ethan Bennett’s voice.

Noah ran.

He reached the hallway before Vanessa could stop him.

“Dad!”

Ethan barely had time to put down his bag before Noah wrapped both arms around him.

The boy was damp.

Crying.

Shaking.

Ethan’s hand went immediately to the back of his head.

“Hey. What happened?”

Noah hid behind him.

“She hurt me.”

Vanessa appeared at the end of the hallway.

For half a second her face was blank.

Then the transformation happened.

Her shoulders lowered.

Her eyes filled.

Her mouth trembled.

“Ethan…”

She looked devastated.

“Not again.”

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

Not toward Noah.

Toward Ethan.

“He’s been making things up all week.”

“No!”

Noah grabbed his father’s jacket.

“She put my face in the fish tank!”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then began crying.

“See?”

She looked at Ethan as if she were the victim of something she could barely endure.

“This is what I’ve been trying to tell you.”

Noah stared at his father.

“She did!”

Vanessa whispered:

“He’s angry at me because I’m not Claire.”

The name changed the room.

Claire Bennett.

Ethan’s first wife.

Noah’s mother.

Dead for three years.

At least that was the sentence Ethan had repeated until it became fact.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I’ve tried everything. Therapy routines. Patience. Letting him talk about her. But lately…”

She looked toward Noah.

“…he’s started saying things that aren’t real.”

Noah shook his head.

“She’s lying.”

Ethan had been awake since four that morning.

Flight changed.

Client meeting cancelled.

Two days early home.

He wanted one simple explanation.

Vanessa had spent three years building a reputation for patience.

Noah had spent three weeks having nightmares.

The easy explanation was standing directly in front of him.

He looked down.

“Noah.”

The boy waited.

“Enough.”

The word struck harder than Ethan intended.

Noah’s face went still.

Vanessa looked away.

But not before Noah saw it.

A tiny smile.

Gone immediately.

Then Noah said:

“I’m not lying.”

Ethan sighed.

“Go upstairs.”

“My mom is still alive.”

Silence.

Ethan looked at him.

“What did you just say?”

Vanessa’s face changed for less than a second.

Then she recovered.

“Ethan.”

Her tone became gentle again.

“You see?”

She looked at Noah with heartbreaking sympathy.

“He still believes Claire is alive.”

“No.”

Noah’s tears returned.

“I heard her.”

Ethan’s chest tightened.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t encourage this.”

“Noah,” Ethan said, “go upstairs.”

The boy didn’t move.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

“Last night…”

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the phone in her hand.

“…I heard Mom call her.”

Ethan slowly turned.

Vanessa did not flinch.

She looked straight at her husband.

“You’re really going to believe a seven-year-old child?”

Ethan said nothing.

May you like

And for the first time since she entered his life, Vanessa Hale Bennett did not know what he was thinking.
