Chapter 6 - THE CALL LOG THAT WASN’T THERE

Ethan did not put Noah on the phone.

Not yet.

The woman understood.

“I know.”

Her speech came slowly.

“I know you need proof.”

Ethan gripped the kitchen counter.

“What happened to you?”

A pause.

“I don’t remember all of it.”

“Where are you?”

“Santa Barbara.”

“Who are you with?”

“Dr. Halpern. Mira. The center.”

Names.

He wrote them down.

“What do you remember about me?”

The woman laughed softly.

Then cried.

“That’s not fair.”

“I know.”

“You hate cilantro.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Public enough.

“You broke your left wrist at twelve.”

Not public.

“You proposed because the restaurant lost our reservation.”

His breathing changed.

“And I said no.”

Rachel covered her mouth from across the room.

The woman continued:

“Then yes.”

Ethan remembered.

Claire rejected the proposal because she thought he was proposing out of panic after the ruined dinner.

Twenty minutes later, standing beside his car, she changed her mind.

Only four people knew.

One was dead.

Maybe.

“Why Vanessa?”

He asked it before anything else.

The woman went silent.

“She was the first name I remembered.”

Painfully ironic.

“How long have you been talking to her?”

“Six weeks.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Another silence.

“She said you had moved on.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“She said Noah was doing well.”

He looked at his son.

“She said…”

The woman’s voice broke.

“…he barely remembers me.”

Noah still slept with Claire’s old photograph in his nightstand.

Ethan sat down.

“What exactly did Vanessa tell you?”

“She said you were married.”

“That part is true.”

“I know.”

“She said?”

“That coming back suddenly would hurt him.”

Possible.

“She said we needed a plan.”

Reasonable.

“At first I agreed.”

“And then?”

“I wanted to hear Noah.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“She kept saying no.”

“Why?”

“She said he was fragile.”

Ethan looked at Rachel.

Anger began rising.

“Did she tell you he thinks you’re dead?”

The woman stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?”

Ethan immediately regretted asking.

“He…”

Her voice collapsed.

“He thinks I’m dead?”

Rachel turned away.

Ethan said:

“We told him after the search ended.”

“I thought…”

She struggled.

“I thought Vanessa told you I was alive.”

“When?”

“Not at first.”

“Claire—”

The name escaped.

The woman began sobbing.

That sound destroyed the last distance he had been protecting.

Still not proof.

But emotionally—

it was her.

Ethan asked:

“When did you think she told me?”

“Two weeks ago.”

Exactly when Vanessa admitted believing the possibility.

“What changed?”

“I remembered enough.”

“Enough for what?”

“My full name. Your hospital. Malibu. Noah’s birthday.”

“And Vanessa said?”

“That she needed to prepare you.”

Ethan felt sick.

Prepare him.

While telling him Noah was hallucinating.

The woman continued.

“Yesterday I told her I was calling you myself.”

Ethan’s eyes closed.

Noah heard.

Vanessa panicked.

The aquarium.

Sequence.

Not yet fully proven.

But coherent.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“I need to verify identity before Noah speaks to you.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

That answer sounded exactly like her.

She had always preferred hard truth to comforting speed.

“I’ll sign anything.”

“Medical records.”

“Yes.”

“DNA.”

“Yes.”

“Anything.”

“Yes.”

Then she asked:

“Is he okay?”

Ethan looked at Noah.

His son was watching him.

Waiting.

“He’s safe.”

That was true.

Then Noah whispered:

“Is it Mom?”

Ethan covered the phone.

“I think it might be.”

Noah began crying.

Not loudly.

Just tears falling.

Ethan looked at the phone again.

And suddenly he understood something worse than Vanessa’s lie.

If Claire was real, there was no return to before.

There were now two families occupying the same history.

The one Claire lost.

And the one Vanessa built.

May you like

Somebody had spent six weeks trying to decide which one was allowed to exist.
