Chapter 18 - CLAIRE DOESN’T COME HOME

Claire did not move back to Malibu.

Everyone assumed she would.

Rachel prepared a room.

Ethan’s attorney discussed residence questions.

Noah asked which bedroom she would use.

Claire said no.

Not yet.

She stayed in Santa Barbara near her medical team.

Then rented a small apartment.

Why?

Because survival did not restore capacity.

She still became overwhelmed in crowds.

Still lost words when exhausted.

Still had memory gaps.

She had not parented a child for three years.

Noah was not four anymore.

Claire told Ethan:

“If I come home because everyone thinks a mother belongs home, we’ll turn me into another role before we know who I am.”

He understood.

Painfully.

Their first meetings with Noah were supervised by Dr. Cole.

Not because Claire was dangerous.

Because reunion carried enormous emotional weight.

Noah deserved pacing.

Claire deserved pacing.

Vanessa had used “pacing” as an excuse to conceal.

That did not make pacing itself wrong.

Same action.

Different transparency.

Different consent.

That distinction became central.
