Chapter 13 - THE VOICEMAIL SHE DELETED THREE YEARS AGO

The old voicemail surfaced because Vanessa remembered it in therapy.

Three weeks after Claire disappeared, an unknown number called.

Vanessa was in Phoenix for work.

She listened once.

A confused woman.

“Nessa…”

Long pause.

“Noah…”

Then static.

Vanessa deleted it.

She assumed a cruel prank.

At the time, reasonable.

Claire’s disappearance had been public locally.

Vanessa received strange messages before.

She told no one.

Three years later, Claire’s first new call revived the memory.

That became another reason Vanessa delayed.

If Ethan learned about the old voicemail, he would ask whether Claire could have been found years earlier.

Could she?

Probably not from one broken message.

Maybe.

That uncertainty terrified Vanessa.

Because grief creates backward fantasies.

If I had called.

If I had searched.

If I had believed.

Vanessa knew Ethan might carry guilt forever.

She also knew he might blame her.

So she buried the old voicemail again.

That was not protecting him.

It was protecting herself from his possible anger.

The distinction became clearer every time she told the story.
