Chapter 19 - NOAH HEARS HIS MOTHER’S VOICE

The first call lasted twelve minutes.
Claire sat in Dr. Halpern’s office.
Noah sat beside Ethan.
Dr. Cole nearby.
Claire appeared on screen.
Noah stared.
She stared back.
Neither spoke.
Finally Claire whispered:
“Little Noah.”
He began crying.
She did too.
Then:
“Little light.”
Noah covered his mouth.
“You’re really Mom.”
Claire nodded.
“I am.”
“Why didn’t you come home?”
There it was.
No warmup.
Children go directly to wound.
Claire breathed carefully.
“I was hurt.”
“I know.”
“And for a long time, I didn’t remember enough.”
“Did you forget me?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Sometimes.”
Noah cried harder.
Ethan wanted to intervene.
Dr. Cole subtly stopped him.
Truth needed space.
Claire continued.
“But forgetting is not the same as not loving.”
“How?”
“I don’t know how to explain it perfectly.”
She touched her chest.
“There were times I didn’t know your name, but I knew I was missing somebody.”
Noah listened.
“I think that somebody was you.”
Not certainty she couldn’t prove.
Honest.
Noah asked:
“Did Vanessa tell you I forgot you?”
Claire’s face changed.
“Yes.”
“I didn’t.”
“I know now.”
“Did that make you sad?”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe her?”
“Yes.”
Noah frowned.
“Why does everybody believe Vanessa?”
Silence.
Even Dr. Cole almost smiled.
Good question.
Claire answered:
“Because she sounds very sure.”
Noah looked at Ethan.
He understood.
Adults who sound certain win too often.

That became the lesson nobody intended.
