Chapter 23 - CLAIRE MEETS THE WOMAN WHO TOOK HER PLACE

Claire requested the meeting.
Vanessa almost refused.
Then agreed.
Mediator present.
Therapists available.
Ethan absent.
Important.
This was not a contest over him.
Claire entered first.
Vanessa followed.
They stared at each other.
Former friends.
One presumed dead.
One married to the other’s husband.
No screenplay could make that ordinary.
Claire spoke first.
“Why did you let my son believe I was dead after you knew I wasn’t?”
Vanessa began:
“I was trying—”
Claire raised a hand.
“No.”
Vanessa stopped.
“I know every reason.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“Brain injury. Verification. Ethan remarried. Noah’s grief. Your marriage.”
She leaned forward.
“I’m asking when those reasons stopped being true and you kept lying anyway.”
Vanessa looked down.
That was the exact question.
Finally:
“When I realized telling him might cost me everything.”
Claire nodded.
Truth.
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn’t plan any of this.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised her.
Claire continued:
“You made one cowardly decision.”
Then another.
“And then you protected the first decision instead of the people it hurt.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Yes.”
Claire asked:
“Did you love Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Then why hurt him?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because he knew something that could take my life away.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“He is not responsible for preserving your life.”
“I know.”
“Now.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“You called me first.”
Claire looked at her.
“I know.”
“You trusted me.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because once, before all of this, you were someone I felt safe with.”
That destroyed Vanessa more than hatred would have.
Claire continued:
“That’s the part I grieve.”
Not Ethan.
Not the house.
Friendship.
Vanessa whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Claire nodded.
“I believe you are.”
Not forgiveness.
Recognition.
May you like
There is a difference.
