Chapter 13 - THE WHITE BOW

Lila removed her bow herself.
She placed it before Detective Ortiz.
Warren believed Ethan’s second copy had been hidden inside something belonging to her.
The white bow contained no memory card.
No compartment.
No hard edge.
Evelyn examined its clasp.
It was ordinary plastic.
“Where did it come from?” Ortiz asked.
Naomi had ordered it with the flower-girl dress.
The sealed box arrived two days before the wedding.
Lila turned the ribbon over.
One word had been stitched into it with white thread.
LISTEN.
“Daddy called all my bows treasure bows,” she said.
“Did he hide things in them?”
“Only clues.”
Naomi remembered the music box.
A small silver bow decorated its lid.
The box was already destroyed.
Gideon had won.
Then Lila shook her head.
“He didn’t mean listen to the box.”
“What did he mean?”
“Listen to the song.”
Evelyn had recorded the ballroom while the lullaby played.
Technicians isolated its audio.
Beneath the melody was a repeating sequence of tones.
They were too quiet for adults to notice.
Lila had heard them because Ethan used the same pattern during their treasure hunts.
“Short, short, long,” she said. “It’s a number.”
The tones formed an encrypted code.
Evelyn sent the recording to police analysts.
The second copy had not been stored inside the music box.
It had been hidden inside the lullaby.
And the hotel’s security camera had recorded it before the fire destroyed the box.
The blinking red light had preserved Ethan’s final evidence.
Ortiz began decoding the audio.
A video file appeared.
Ethan sat before a camera three days before the crash.
“If you are watching this, Gideon Price knows I discovered the transfers.”
He named every false charity.
He described Warren’s involvement.
Then he held up a signed order.
Arthur had authorized Gideon to remove Ethan from his home and place him under private medical supervision.
Naomi looked at Arthur.
“You signed it?”
Arthur’s face collapsed.
“Gideon told me Ethan had become dangerous.”
Ethan continued speaking on the recording.
“If Arthur signed this, he believed a lie.”
Then Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“The person who planned the crash was not Warren.”
The video froze.

One final name began loading.
Before it appeared, every screen in the hotel turned black.
