Chapter 22 - THE LULLABY CODE

Gideon refused to explain the Lake Geneva account.
His lawyer claimed Lila created it herself.
The accusation was absurd.
That did not make it harmless.
Online headlines appeared within hours.
EIGHT-YEAR-OLD HEIRESS LINKED TO MISSING MILLIONS.
Naomi turned off every television in the hospital.
“They framed her again.”
Ethan examined the account record.
Lila’s biometric profile had been captured from a children’s charity event two years earlier.
Gideon organized the event.
He asked every child to touch a digital wall and record a message.
The wall had collected fingerprints and voices.
Arthur looked sick.
“I approved that event.”
Naomi faced him.
“You approved many things you never examined.”
Evelyn returned to the lullaby recording.
The tones did more than contain Ethan’s video.
A second layer held a list of authorization keys.
One key matched the Lake Geneva account.
The music could open it without Lila’s fingerprint.
Ethan had anticipated that Gideon might weaponize his daughter’s identity.
He built a way to clear her name.
The account opened.
It contained sixty-four million dollars.
It also contained a ledger documenting every person Gideon bribed.
Judges.
Bank officers.
Private doctors.
Hotel contractors.
At the bottom was one final payment.
Five million dollars to Warren Caldwell.
Warren stared at the entry.
“I never received it.”
The account had been created the night Ethan crashed.
Its destination belonged to Warren’s wife.
She claimed she knew nothing.
Ortiz checked the transaction.
The money was withdrawn in cash by someone using Warren’s identification.
Security photographs showed Gideon.
Warren had been framed too.
That did not erase his crimes.
But it explained why Gideon could control him.
Every time Warren threatened to speak, Gideon showed him evidence of a payment that made him appear responsible for the crash.
Warren chose silence to protect himself.
Lila listened.
“Why didn’t he tell the truth if he knew it was a lie?”
Naomi answered carefully.
“Because telling the truth would also reveal the bad things he really did.”
Warren heard her from the doorway.
“That is exactly why.”
He placed a written confession before Ortiz.
It admitted the theft.
The planted phone.
The assault.
And three years of silence.
“I will testify against Gideon.”
Lila looked at him.
“Are you doing it because you’re sorry?”
May you like
Warren shook his head.
“I’m doing it because being sorry is not enough.”
