Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR WHO VANISHED

Dr. Miriam Sloane disappeared three years earlier.

Her license expired six months after Ethan’s crash.

Her apartment was emptied overnight.

Her accounts were closed.

No missing-person report was filed.

Ortiz placed the old medical record before Naomi.

“Miriam declared Ethan dead at 2:18 a.m. Warren identified him at 3:07.”

“Why did no one ask me?”

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“You were sedated.”

“On whose order?”

The report answered.

Dr. Miriam Sloane had treated Naomi for shock.

She recommended that no family member view Ethan’s remains.

The explanation cited severe burns.

The body was transferred to a private funeral home owned by a Caldwell subsidiary.

The coffin remained sealed.

Gideon signed the burial authorization.

“Warren identified him,” Naomi said. “Miriam declared him dead. Gideon buried him.”

Arthur understood the pattern.

“And I paid every bill without asking a question.”

Lila listened from the sofa.

Naomi wanted her taken elsewhere.

Lila tightened her arms around the cardigan.

“No more secrets.”

The adults became silent.

Naomi sat beside her.

“You’re right.”

Evelyn’s technicians recovered the number that called Room 814.

It belonged to a prepaid device activated that afternoon.

Its last signal came from the hotel parking garage.

Police searched the black sedan again.

Inside the trunk, Naomi found a silver scarf.

A dark stain marked one edge.

It was not blood.

It smelled like antiseptic.

Ortiz discovered a hidden compartment.

Inside were sedatives, restraints and a sealed envelope addressed to Naomi.

The letter was written by Miriam.

Ethan survived the crash.

Gideon intercepted the ambulance before it reached the public hospital.

I helped keep Ethan alive.

I believed Gideon was protecting him.

By the time I learned the truth, I was a prisoner too.

Naomi turned the page.

The final sentence had been written in a hurry.

The woman wearing my scarf is not me.

Evelyn looked toward the security monitor.

The disguised woman had walked through the hotel less than an hour earlier.

If Miriam was telling the truth, someone had copied her damaged hand, her clothing and her face.

Ortiz’s phone rang.

A woman matching Miriam’s description had been found unconscious near the river.

Before losing consciousness, she repeated one phrase.

“Protect the child with the white bow.”
