Chapter 27 - GIDEON PRICE FALLS

Gideon’s conviction did not release Warren from responsibility.
His trial began three weeks later.
He pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor described the attack in the ballroom.
The planted phone.
The shattered board.
The child on the marble floor.
Warren did not contest a single detail.
His attorney requested leniency because he helped expose Gideon.
Naomi opposed it.
“Cooperation after being caught does not undo what he chose to do.”
Warren asked to speak before sentencing.
He faced Lila but did not approach her.
“I was afraid of the truth.”
His voice shook.
“So I tried to make everyone afraid of you.”
Lila held Naomi’s hand.
Warren continued.
“I cannot ask you to forgive me. I have no right to ask you for anything.”
The judge sentenced him for assault, evidence tampering, fraud and conspiracy.
He would remain in prison for twelve years.
Arthur showed no emotion when his son was taken away.
Outside the courtroom, he finally wept.
Naomi did not comfort him.
Some pain needed to be carried by the person who created it.
Adrian pleaded guilty to conspiracy and unlawful surveillance.
His cooperation reduced his sentence.
Celeste completed the annulment.
She left Chicago and began working with an organization supporting victims of financial abuse.
Miriam Sloane regained her medical license after investigators confirmed that she had saved Ethan.
She had falsified part of the original report to keep Gideon from moving him.
Her lie was dangerous.
It was also the reason Ethan survived the first night.
The recovered trust money was returned.
Arthur resigned as chairman.
He appointed an independent board.
Naomi accepted temporary leadership under one condition.
No Caldwell family member would control the children’s trust alone again.
Arthur agreed.
Ethan began physical therapy.
Some memories returned slowly.
Others did not.
One afternoon, he found Lila drawing a security camera.
Its red light was colored bright red.
“What is that?” he asked.
“The camera that told the truth.”
Ethan sat beside her.
“The camera remembered the truth.”
Lila looked toward Naomi.
“Mommy knew it first.”
Naomi smiled.
For the first time since the wedding, Lila drew herself without a bandage.
Then she added one final figure near the ballroom door.
A woman wearing a silver scarf.
Miriam.
