Chapter 24 - WARREN TAKES THE STAND

The missing guest was Malcolm Reed.

He had attended the wedding as a representative of Meridian Bank.

His signature approved the false transfer.

Police found his hotel room empty.

On the bed lay a one-way ticket to Switzerland.

His flight left in two hours.

Ortiz arrested him at the airport gate.

Malcolm requested immunity.

In exchange, he revealed Gideon’s final defense.

The trust documents in Arthur’s safe had not merely been stolen.

They had been replaced.

The version Arthur planned to sign secretly granted Gideon permanent authority.

If the wedding had proceeded normally, Arthur would have signed away the trust without reading it.

The attack changed everything.

Warren’s uncontrolled violence forced the family to examine the documents.

By striking Lila, he accidentally destroyed Gideon’s quiet plan.

That did not make him a hero.

It made his cruelty the mistake that exposed a larger crime.

At Gideon’s preliminary hearing, Warren took the stand.

Naomi and Lila watched from the front row.

“Did Gideon force you to plant the phone?” the prosecutor asked.

“No.”

“Did he force you to accuse your niece?”

“No.”

“Did he force you to strike her?”

Warren looked at Lila.

“No.”

“Then why did you do it?”

“Because I believed fear gave me permission.”

The courtroom became still.

Warren admitted helping Gideon conceal the first stolen transfers.

He admitted identifying a stranger as Ethan.

He admitted remaining silent after seeing Ethan alive at Saint Alden.

Gideon’s attorney stood.

“Mr. Caldwell is testifying to reduce his own sentence.”

“Yes,” Warren answered.

“So this confession is self-serving.”

“Everything I did for three years was self-serving.”

The answer damaged Gideon more than denial could have.

Then Malcolm Reed testified.

He described the false transfer.

The forged incapacity order.

The account created in Lila’s name.

The prosecutor played Gideon’s confession from the boardroom.

Gideon remained calm.

Until the lullaby recording was introduced.

Ethan’s hidden ledger documented a payment no one had seen before.

Gideon paid for the car used in the crash.

The purchase was made through Adrian’s company.

Adrian stared at the record.

“My father used my signature.”

Gideon smiled.

Now his own son appeared responsible.

The same method used against Ethan, Naomi, Lila and Warren had finally been used against Adrian.

May you like

But Adrian possessed one piece of evidence Gideon had not planted.

A recording he had kept for twelve years.
