Chapter 21 - CALDWELL TOWER

Gideon Price was taken from Caldwell Tower in handcuffs.

News cameras surrounded the entrance.

He kept his head high until a reporter played his confession.

I ordered the vehicle stopped.

His face changed.

For thirty years, Gideon had controlled what the public knew about the Caldwell family.

Now he could not control his own voice.

Miriam reversed Arthur’s false diagnosis.

The bank restored his authority.

The transfer remained suspended.

But sixty-four million dollars was still missing.

Detective Ortiz searched Gideon’s accounts.

They were empty.

Every false charity led to a company registered under Ethan’s name.

Gideon had built the evidence to survive his arrest.

If he fell, Ethan would appear to be the thief.

Naomi found her husband in the tower’s medical suite.

Lila sat beside him.

She had removed the white bow for the first time since the attack.

It rested in Ethan’s hand.

“I thought you were dead,” she said.

“I know.”

“Did you hear me when I talked to you at the cemetery?”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“I told you about school.”

“You can tell me again.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

Naomi stood in the doorway.

For three years, she had imagined this reunion.

None of those imaginings included a bandage on Lila, a stolen trust or the knowledge that almost everyone in her family had failed them.

Ethan reached for her.

Naomi took his hand.

She did not promise forgiveness.

She promised presence.

Arthur entered.

Ethan’s body became rigid.

The old man stopped.

“I signed the order.”

“Yes.”

“I believed you were sick.”

“You believed Gideon because his lie protected the company.”

Arthur accepted it.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at Lila.

“She believed her daughter when two hundred people did not.”

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“I have learned the difference.”

Ortiz entered with new evidence.

The missing money had been located.

It was held in a private account beneath Lake Geneva.

Only one person could open it.

The biometric authorization belonged to Lila.

Ethan stared at the record.

“I never created that.”

Gideon had registered Lila’s identity before the wedding.

The trust had not merely been stolen in Ethan’s name.

It had been hidden in his daughter’s.
