Chapter 12 - JULIAN FINALLY BREAKSJulian asked to speak without his mother.

His attorney still present.
He looked destroyed.
Not polished now.
“I lied about Nora.”
Harrison said nothing.
“I told security to keep her downstairs.”
“Why?”
“Because she saw too much.”
There.
Julian cried.
“I didn’t kill Amelia.”
Harrison remained still.
“Tell me what you did.”
Julian confessed to the financial scheme.
Not all of it.
Enough.
Marianne created Cresthaven after identifying a way to extract consulting fees from Kingsley Strategic Holdings.
Julian approved invoices.
Leonard handled internal documentation.
Bennett Voss provided shell-company infrastructure.
Dr. Samuel Voss was used because his brother needed legitimacy with wealthy clients.
Julian received indirect benefits.
Marianne received the most.
“Did Amelia know?”
“She figured it out.”
“When?”
“Three weeks before she died.”
“Why not stop?”
“My mother said she could restructure everything and repay.”
“She always says that.”
Julian looked ashamed.
“Did Amelia threaten police?”
“Yes.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Divorce?”
“Yes.”
“Trust change?”
“Yes.”
“What did your mother say?”
Julian closed his eyes.
“She said Amelia was emotional.”
Harrison’s anger rose.
“Go on.”
“She said pregnancy was making her reckless.”
“Go on.”
“She said Samuel could calm her down.”
Harrison stared.
“Did you agree?”
“To a doctor checking her.”
“Medication?”
“No.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did you cover up after she died?”
Julian broke.
Because Marianne told him everything would be blamed on Voss’s medical judgment.
Because calling police would expose Cresthaven.
Because if investigators examined Amelia’s files, the fraud would surface.
Because he was terrified.
“So you let Nora stay locked downstairs.”
“Yes.”
“You let the funeral proceed.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe my daughter died from illness.”
Julian sobbed.
“Yes.”
Harrison wanted to hit him.
Did not.
That mattered.
“Did you know the baby might have been saved?”
Julian’s face collapsed.
“I try not to think about it.”
Harrison’s voice became almost a whisper.
“You will think about it every day.”
Julian cried harder.
Then Harrison asked:
“Who ordered Leonard to give Amelia the drink?”
Julian shook his head.
“I thought Samuel did.”
“Did Samuel?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened after the nursery recording ended?”
Julian remembered.
Leonard carried the glass away.
Amelia refused it.
Then Dr. Voss came upstairs.
He gave Amelia one tablet.
She took it after Julian begged her to calm down.
Twenty minutes later Amelia asked for water.
Nora brought it.
Julian left briefly to call Marianne.
When he returned, Amelia was drinking from the glass.
Then collapse.
“Who poured the water?”
“Nora brought the tray.”
“Who touched it before Amelia?”
“Leonard.”
There.
Again.
Julian continued.
After Amelia collapsed, Voss panicked.
Leonard remained strangely calm.
“Too calm?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
Julian looked at Harrison.
“He said…”
“What?”
“‘We stick to the illness story.’”
Harrison felt something turn to ice inside him.
Not grief.
May you like
Not even rage.
Certainty that Leonard knew more than he admitted.
