Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN ABOVE THEMMarianne was arrested on fraud-related charges first.
The death investigation continued.
Her attorneys called the burner-phone messages ambiguous.
“She cannot make tomorrow’s meeting” could mean rescheduling.
“No hospital” could mean respecting patient wishes.
“Same outcome” could refer to inheritance planning.
Every phrase had an alternative explanation.
Then Nora remembered something.
Amelia had called Marianne that afternoon on speakerphone.
Nora was in the dressing room.
Amelia said:
“I know what you did with Cresthaven.”
Marianne replied:
“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”
Amelia:
“I know enough.”
Then:
“I’m changing everything.”
Marianne became quiet.
“What does Julian get?”
“Nothing he can control.”
“What does the child get?”
“Protection.”
Marianne answered:
“You think your father will protect that child from everything?”
Amelia:
“Yes.”
Marianne:
“He couldn’t even protect you from being lonely.”
Nora remembered Amelia hanging up.
That emotional cruelty mattered.
But again, not proof.
The stronger evidence came from Marianne’s laptop.
A document opened the day before Amelia died:
CONTINGENCY — PRE-BIRTH SUCCESSION
It mapped exactly what happened to Amelia’s shares if mother and unborn child died before live delivery.
Marianne had highlighted:
Surviving spouse receives voting interest.
Then another note:
Julian controls after transfer. Julian can assign proxy.
To whom?
Marianne.
Under an unsigned proxy agreement, Julian would have granted his mother voting authority over Amelia’s inherited shares.
If Amelia and baby died, Marianne stood to gain strategic control of assets worth tens of millions.
Motive.
Financial.
Specific.
Then the medical planning file.
A calendar entry:
SV — 6:30 / L handles household / J kept uninformed re details.
SV.
Samuel Voss.
L.
Leonard.
J.
Julian.
Kept uninformed re details.
Harrison read it repeatedly.
Marianne had deliberately kept her own son from knowing the full plan.
Perhaps because Julian was weak.
Perhaps because she knew he might stop it.
That did not absolve him of the cover-up.
It did explain the nursery recording.
Julian sounded confused because he was.
Marianne had built the fatal plan around his corruption without fully including him in the final act.
