Chapter 1 - THE RECORDER UNDER THE TABLENoah was already crying when Adrian Vale stepped out of the shadows beside the grand staircase.

His fourteen-month-old son was on the marble floor, one little arm stretched toward Maya Ortiz.

Maya was lying sideways several feet away, one hand pressed against her stomach.

And Celeste Harrow was standing over both of them.

Adrian had heard her last sentence.

“Touch him again… and you disappear.”

Celeste turned.

The cruelty vanished from her face so quickly it was almost frightening.

“Adrian!”

She pointed at Maya.

“She hurt Noah!”

Adrian did not answer.

He crossed the foyer immediately, lifted his son into his arms, and held him against his chest.

Noah grabbed Adrian’s coat with both hands.

His crying changed.

Still frightened.

But relieved.

Adrian looked at Maya.

“What happened?”

Maya tried to stand.

Celeste interrupted.

“She pulled him. I was trying to stop her.”

Maya stared at her.

“You pulled him by his arm!”

“Liar.”

Then Adrian noticed something beneath the antique wooden table.

A tiny red light.

Blinking.

He crouched, still holding Noah securely, and reached beneath the right side.

A small black voice recorder.

Celeste stopped breathing.

“Adrian…”

He looked at her.

Then pressed PLAY.

Static.

Footsteps.

Noah crying.

Maya’s voice:

“Stop! You’re hurting his arm!”

Then Celeste.

Clear.

Cold.

“No one will believe a cheap nanny over me.”

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

Celeste’s face turned white.

“Turn that off.”

He did not.

Another portion played.

Celeste:

“If Adrian ever hears about this, you’ll never work in another decent house again.”

Maya:

“I don’t care about the job. I care about Noah.”

Celeste:

“You should care. People disappear from this house very easily.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Celeste stepped backward.

“That’s out of context.”

A trembling voice came from the corridor.

“Sir…”

Everyone turned.

Audrey Mills stood there in her gray housemaid uniform.

She had worked at Vale Mansion for twelve years.

Adrian had never seen her look afraid of anything.

Tonight she was shaking.

She looked at Noah.

Then Celeste.

“This wasn’t the first time.”

Adrian stared.

“How many times?”

Audrey opened her mouth.

Celeste snapped:

“Don’t you dare.”

Adrian’s voice became dangerously calm.

“Celeste.”

She stopped.

He shifted Noah higher against his chest.

Then looked at Audrey again.

“How many?”

Audrey whispered:

“Enough that I should have spoken months ago.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Adrian felt something inside him go cold.

He had spent the past year believing Celeste loved Noah.

She bought him clothes.

Held him at charity dinners.

Posted photographs of herself reading to him.

She had even once told Adrian:

“I don’t want to replace his mother. I just want him to feel loved.”

Now his son was clinging to him as if terrified she might come closer.

Adrian looked toward the disabled security camera above the foyer.

“No recording?”

Audrey shook her head.

“She always made sure.”

Always.

That word mattered.

Adrian pulled out his phone.

Celeste suddenly stepped forward.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling Noah’s pediatrician.”

“Adrian, this is ridiculous.”

“And my attorney.”

Her expression changed.

“And security.”

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“You are leaving this house tonight.”

Celeste laughed once.

“You’re throwing away our wedding because of a nanny?”

“No.”

Adrian looked down at the recorder.

“I’m postponing every decision until I know exactly who I invited into my son’s home.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with rage.

Not heartbreak.

Rage.

And that was when Adrian understood the recorder had not merely captured one ugly moment.

May you like

It had opened a door.

He just did not yet know how much darkness was behind it.
