Chapter 15 - THE DEBT THAT DISAPPEAREDCeleste’s attorney produced statements.

Gavin’s account: zero.

Two gaming creditors: settled.

Private notes: acquired.

Nine million in looming obligations apparently disappeared.

Media narrative shifted.

Maybe Adrian’s investigators exaggerated.

Maybe Celeste was wealthy after all.

Maybe extortion claims were revenge.

Adrian did not believe coincidence.

“Who paid?”

His CFO traced.

Not Celeste.

A private entity purchased several debts at discount.

Northstar Bridge LLC.

Opaque.

Adrian assumed another wealthy boyfriend.

Wrong.

Northstar traced to Gavin Rourke’s former partner, Elise Maddox.

Elise had financed gaming clients.

Why buy Celeste’s debts?

Adrian met her.

She was forty-four, clinical, unimpressed.

“I didn’t buy them to help Celeste.”

“Then why?”

“To stop Gavin from destroying evidence.”

Elise suspected extortion years earlier.

Gavin used debt as leverage over Celeste.

Celeste used recordings over others.

Everyone holding everyone.

Elise bought notes to separate financial claims from criminal evidence and protect herself from Gavin’s collapsing business.

Not noble.

Self-preservation.

But records came with files.

One contract showed Celeste pledged “future settlement proceeds” from marriage to Adrian as evidence of repayment.

She had represented herself as virtually guaranteed access to millions after wedding.

Adrian stared.

“She was borrowing against marriage?”

Elise:

“In effect, yes.”

Celeste had turned engagement into creditworthiness.

That made wedding deadline clear.

Monday was not simply a payment date.

If Celeste could show wedding proceeding, creditors extended.

If wedding collapsed, they called debts.

That was why she panicked when Adrian discovered Noah abuse.

Her entire financial façade depended on becoming Mrs. Vale.

Then Elise said:

“She told people wedding was worth at least twenty million to her.”

Adrian’s face went cold.

“Prenup was nowhere near that.”

“She lied.”

Again.

Celeste not only lied to Adrian.

She lied to lenders about Adrian.

His name became collateral.

Then a document surfaced with Adrian’s forged initials on a “relationship confirmation.”

Not legal guarantee.

But enough to mislead private creditors.

He had never signed.

Forgery.

More consequences.

Adrian’s lawyer said:

“She keeps crossing jurisdictions and categories.”

Child mistreatment.

Assault on Maya.

Extortion.

Unlawful recording.

Charity misuse.

Forgery.

Threats.

Obstruction.

No single dramatic crime.

A web.

That was why case took time.

Then Celeste contacted Adrian again.

“I can make all of this go away.”

He almost laughed.

“How?”

“Marry me.”

Silence.

She actually said it.

“Adrian, once we’re married, we can claim this was private family dispute.”

“You think I would marry you now?”

“You loved me.”

“I loved who you pretended to be.”

Celeste’s voice hardened.

“And you think everyone you love is clean?”

“No.”

“I think they tell me when they hurt my son.”

She hung up.

For first time Adrian heard desperation crack through polish.

Her false control was slipping.

But she still had one move left.

Destroy Maya completely.
