Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN ADRIAN THOUGHT WAS A MILLIONAIRECeleste Harrow had not always been pretending.

That was what made the deception effective.
Her father, Theodore Harrow, built a regional luxury-hotel company and died leaving Celeste significant wealth.
At thirty-one, she genuinely had millions.
At thirty-five, most was gone.
Adrian’s investigators reconstructed enough to understand.
It began socially.
Private casino rooms.
Luxury resorts.
High-stakes poker.
Then larger bets.
Then losses.
Then the belief every loss could be fixed by one extraordinary win.
Celeste once won almost four million dollars during a three-night run.
Her financial adviser begged her to stop.
She did not.
Within two weeks, most of it vanished again.
Her father discovered the gambling before his death.
He restricted portions of family trust.
Celeste still benefited.
But she could no longer withdraw freely.
She told society nothing.
She still wore couture.
Leased expensive cars.
Borrowed jewelry through stylists.
Kept her membership at clubs.
Paid for private jets occasionally so people continued assuming she could always afford them.
Adrian met her during that performance.
He had specifically asked his team:
“Does she have financial motives?”
Answer:
“She appears independently wealthy.”
Appearances.
Again.
When he confronted her through attorneys, Celeste gave written response:
My personal finances are irrelevant to my relationship with Adrian.
Perhaps.
Until the recorder.
Until Monday.
Until the man demanding payment.
Adrian’s team identified the voice.
Gavin Rourke.
Forty-seven.
Former private gaming host.
Now “financial concierge” for high-net-worth clients.
A polished description for someone who arranged access to very private gambling rooms and very expensive credit.
Rourke refused initial call.
Then Adrian sent one message:
I am not paying Celeste’s debts. I only want to know if my son or my name has been used.
Gavin replied.
Then we should meet.
He arrived at Vale’s Manhattan office two days later.
Gray suit.
No nervousness.
Adrian asked:
“How much does Celeste owe?”
Gavin smiled faintly.
“To me?”
“Yes.”
“Less than you think.”
“To everyone?”
“More than she can pay.”
“How much?”
Gavin leaned back.
“Depending what you count? Somewhere around nine million.”
Adrian stared.
“How did she get nine million in credit if she had no money?”
Gavin’s smile disappeared.
“She didn’t.”
That answer changed everything.
“What do you mean?”
“She kept finding cash.”
“From where?”
Gavin studied Adrian.
“You genuinely don’t know.”
“No.”
Rourke looked almost amused.
“Then Miss Harrow has been much more careful with you than she was with others.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Others?”
Gavin stood.
“I think you should ask Charles Whitmore.”
“Who is Charles Whitmore?”
“Someone who paid Celeste a great deal of money.”
“For what?”
Gavin looked at Adrian.
May you like
“Silence.”
And left.
