Chapter 25 - THE WOMEN SHE TRIED TO SILENCESix months later, Maya invited Rachel, Tessa, and Audrey to lunch.

Adrian did not attend.
Good.
It was not his meeting.
Four women who had worked in same house at different times.
Each thought she was alone.
Rachel said:
“I hated you at first.”
Maya laughed.
“Why?”
“Because you stayed.”
“I thought maybe Celeste treated you better.”
Tessa admitted she thought Rachel actually stole bracelet.
Audrey looked ashamed.
“I knew more than I said.”
Rachel reached across table.
“You spoke eventually.”
Audrey cried.
No grand absolution.
But connection.
They discussed establishing informal network for domestic workers to document unsafe workplace conduct and understand reporting rights.
Adrian later offered funding.
Maya said:
“Anonymous funding.”
He agreed.
No Vale branding.
No billionaire heroism.
The people affected should own project.
Meanwhile Noah changed.
He stopped crying at sharp heels.
He slept better.
He reached for Adrian and Maya comfortably.
Audrey remained house manager.
Cameras were transparent.
No hidden devices.
Every employee knew what was recorded and where.
Adrian reduced travel by almost half.
His board survived.
Turns out billion-dollar companies did not collapse because father attended bedtime.
One night Maya handed Noah toy car.
He rolled it across marble foyer toward wooden table.
Same table.
Recorder had long been evidence.
No blinking red light underneath now.
No secret.
Adrian watched.
Maya said:
“He doesn’t remember.”
“Probably not.”
“Good.”
Adrian nodded.
But children can carry feelings before memory.
Safety now mattered.
Then he asked Maya:
“Do you regret coming back?”
“No.”
“Do you trust me?”
Maya considered.
“More than before.”
Not yes.
Adrian smiled.
“Fair.”
Trust earned.
No romantic subplot required.
Then Audrey brought mail.
One envelope from correctional facility.
Celeste.
Addressed to Adrian.
He stared.
Terms allowed written contact? Better no contact with Noah but Adrian maybe can choose. His attorney screened.
Inside:
One page.
I spent years recording everyone else because I thought secrets were power. Now every day is scheduled, observed, counted, and I finally understand what it feels like when privacy isn’t yours.
Then:
Do not forgive me for Noah. Just make sure he never learns love the way I did.
Adrian folded.
He did not respond.
Perhaps someday.
Not now.
Consequences were not cruelty.
Boundaries were not revenge.
May you like
He put letter away.
Then returned to son.
