Chapter 7 - THE FOLDER CALLED “INSURANCE”Adrian did not order anyone to break into the folder illegally.

His attorneys sought proper preservation.
Devices were secured.
Authorities were contacted.
The case widened.
Celeste’s lawyer stopped answering informal questions entirely.
But metadata was enough to show a pattern.
Names.
Initials.
Dates.
Several aligned with wealthy married men.
One aligned with Charles Whitmore.
Another with a federal lobbyist.
One with a hotel owner.
One with a surgeon.
And one folder:
A.V.
Adrian Vale.
His own initials.
He stared.
Maya was in Noah’s room when Adrian returned.
He did not tell her details.
Only:
“Celeste may have secretly recorded people in private situations.”
Maya’s expression changed.
“Without permission?”
“Yes.”
“She did that before?”
“Apparently.”
Maya sat.
“That’s why she always kept her own phones.”
“What?”
“No one touched them.”
“Not even her assistant.”
“She had a second phone she never left downstairs.”
Adrian’s investigators already knew.
They found billing for three devices.
One personal.
One public.
One unregistered to Harrow name.
Then Audrey remembered something.
Celeste once asked maintenance to install a “motion sensor” in a guest suite.
The technician refused because device looked like camera.
Celeste fired him next week.
Adrian located technician.
Derek Cho.
He confirmed.
“It was a miniature camera.”
“Where?”
“Primary guest bedroom at her old Manhattan apartment.”
“Did you install?”
“No.”
“Did someone else?”
“I don’t know.”
But invoice later showed another contractor.
Cash.
No records.
Pattern.
The anger Adrian felt shifted again.
Celeste did not merely lose money and panic.
She had built a method.
Secrecy became currency.
Then authorities interviewed Charles.
For first time, he told his wife.
Not because Celeste forced him.
Because investigation would.
Vivian Whitmore did not scream.
According to Charles, she looked at him for long time and said:
“You let me live inside a lie because you were afraid of being embarrassed.”
Then she left.
Charles asked Adrian later:
“Do you think she’ll come back?”
Adrian answered:
“That isn’t a question I can answer.”
He thought of Celeste.
Then Noah.
What did betrayal cost beyond money?
Families.
Trust.
Safety.
Then Gavin Rourke called Adrian again.
“You found insurance folder.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Celeste called me.”
“What did she want?”
“Money.”
“For what?”
“To disappear.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Where?”
“Europe, maybe.”
“Did you give it?”
“No.”
Then Gavin laughed softly.
“She told me something interesting.”
“What?”
“She said you’ll pay eventually.”
“For her debt?”
“No.”
“For your own privacy.”
Adrian looked at locked folder marked A.V.

Celeste believed she still had leverage.
And perhaps she did.
