**Chapter 14 — Ethan's Final Choice**

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 14 — The Truth Lucas Took to the Stand
Four months later, the federal courthouse in Los Angeles overflowed with reporters. The case against Charles Harrison had become national news, exposing one of the largest corporate fraud conspiracies in recent history.
Lucas Miller entered the courtroom wearing prison clothing and handcuffs.
In exchange for a reduced sentence, he had agreed to testify against Charles.
The courtroom fell silent as Lucas took the witness stand.
For the first time since his arrest, he looked directly at Ethan.
"I'm sorry."
Ethan said nothing.
Lucas turned toward the jury.
"Everything Charles planned was real."
"He recruited me because I could earn people's trust."
"My job was to become Ethan's closest friend."
He admitted to manipulating business partners, stealing confidential information, and helping move millions of dollars through shell companies.
Then the prosecutor asked the question everyone had been waiting for.
"And Emily Harrison?"
Lucas lowered his head.
"I used her."
Emily began crying quietly in the courtroom gallery.
"I knew her marriage was struggling."
"I made sure I was always there whenever Ethan was away."
"I convinced her I loved her."
The prosecutor continued.
"Did you ever intend to leave with her?"
Lucas closed his eyes.
"No."
"I never planned a future with Emily."
"She was simply the easiest way to reach Ethan."
Emily covered her face with both hands.
The truth hurt more than any punishment.
Lucas continued speaking.
"I ruined an innocent family."
"I destroyed friendships."
"I betrayed the only man who ever truly trusted me."
He looked at Ethan once more.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"I just wanted you to know..."
"None of this was your fault."
The courtroom remained silent.
When Lucas stepped down from the witness stand, everyone understood that the greatest damage he had caused wasn't financial.
It was emotional.
And some wounds would never completely heal.
