**Chapter 3 — Ethan Refuses to Make a Scene**

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 3 — The Birthday Gift Ethan Never Gave
No one moved.
The living room remained frozen beneath the glittering chandelier while confetti continued settling onto the marble floor. Emily couldn't stop staring at the envelope lying beside the untouched birthday cake. She recognized Ethan's handwriting immediately.
Her name.
Written carefully across the front.
Ethan picked up the envelope and held it in his hand for several seconds. It suddenly felt meaningless. Only an hour earlier, it had represented hope, excitement, and a future he believed they would continue building together. Now it was nothing more than a reminder of how completely he had been deceived.
Emily wiped tears from her face. "Please... let me explain."
Ethan looked at her calmly.
"You've had three years to explain."
"I was afraid."
"No."
His voice remained quiet.
"You were comfortable."
The words struck harder than any scream could have.
Lucas took one step forward.
"This is my fault too."
Ethan turned toward him.
"You think sharing the blame changes anything?"
Lucas lowered his eyes.
"No."
"It doesn't."
Ethan nodded.
"For once... we agree."
His father finally broke the silence.
"Lucas."
The older man's voice carried years of disappointment.
"We welcomed you into this family."
"My wife called you another son."
"You watched my grandson grow up."
Lucas couldn't look him in the eyes.
"I know."
"And you repaid us like this?"
Lucas had no answer.
Across the room, Ethan's younger sister quietly picked up the family photo album that had been placed beside the birthday decorations. The first page showed Emily and Ethan's wedding day. Everyone in the room had been smiling.
Lucas stood beside Ethan as his best man.
She slowly closed the album.
None of those smiles felt real anymore.
Emily looked desperately at Ethan.
"I never wanted tonight to happen."
Ethan gave a faint, almost invisible smile.
"But it did."
"And maybe..."
"It needed to."
He placed the unopened envelope back on the table.
"I spent months planning tonight."
"My family flew in from three different states."
"My mother baked your favorite cake."
"My father canceled an important business trip."
"Sophie spent an entire week practicing a birthday song."
His voice never rose.
That somehow made every sentence even more painful.
"And you arrived home kissing another man."
Emily covered her face as she began sobbing uncontrollably.
For the first time, she realized this wasn't simply about being caught.
She had destroyed an entire family in a single moment.
Sophie suddenly appeared at the top of the staircase.
"Can I come down now?"
Every adult looked up.
Before anyone answered, she noticed her mother's tears.
"Mommy..."
"Why are you crying?"
Emily instinctively opened her arms.
But Sophie hesitated.
Instead...
She quietly walked toward Ethan and held his hand.
The gesture lasted only a second.
Yet everyone in the room noticed it.
Ethan gently stroked his daughter's hair.
"It's getting late."
"I think we should all go home."
His parents nodded silently.
One by one, family members gathered their coats.
The birthday party ended without anyone tasting the cake.
Without opening a single present.
Without singing Happy Birthday.
As the last guests reached the front door, Ethan called after them.
"Mom."
She turned.
"Would you keep Sophie with you tonight?"
His mother immediately understood.
"Of course."
Sophie hugged her father tightly.
"I love you, Daddy."
"I love you too."
After they left, the massive mansion became painfully quiet.
Only three people remained inside.
Ethan.
Emily.
Lucas.
Ethan looked at Lucas for a long moment.
"You should leave."
Lucas nodded.
"I will."
He walked toward the front door.
Before stepping outside, he quietly said,
"I'm sorry."
Ethan didn't respond.
He simply watched the door close.
Then he turned back toward Emily.
For the first time that night...
The two of them were finally alone.
