**Chapter 9 — Ethan's Quiet Investigation**

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 9 — The Name Ethan Never Expected

The video ended, leaving the room in complete silence.

No one spoke for several seconds.

FBI Special Agent David Mercer stared at the frozen screen before looking back at Ethan. During his career, he had seen countless victims discover painful truths, but nothing quite like this. Lucas Miller hadn't denied the affair. Instead, he had admitted it was only part of a much larger scheme.

"The person behind all of this..." Ethan repeated quietly. "Someone I've trusted for more than twenty years."

Mercer nodded. "Lucas wanted you to hear that sentence."

Emily sat on the sofa with tears streaming down her face. "I don't understand. Lucas told me he loved me. He said we would eventually build a life together."

Mercer looked at her sympathetically.

"If Lucas manipulated wealthy families for years, then he also knew how to manipulate people. You may have been emotionally involved with him, but that doesn't mean he ever intended to leave with you."

Emily lowered her head.

For the first time since being caught, she wondered if she had been betrayed as completely as Ethan.

The forensic specialist continued examining the recovered phone.

"There are several deleted files we can restore," he said. "It may take a few hours."

Mercer's phone suddenly vibrated.

He stepped aside to answer.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

"We've identified the hotel where Lucas recorded the video."

"Can we find him?" Ethan asked.

Mercer shook his head.

"He checked out six hours ago under a fake name."

The specialist interrupted again.

"I recovered another file."

Everyone gathered around the laptop.

It wasn't another video.

It was a scanned contract.

Most of the document had been erased, but one section remained readable.

Primary Financial Beneficiary

Below that heading appeared a single name.

Charles Harrison.

Ethan frowned.

"My grandfather?"

Mercer looked confused.

"I thought your grandfather lived here."

"He does."

"And he's eighty-three."

Mercer zoomed in on the signature.

Then he quietly said,

"This isn't your grandfather."

"There are two Charles Harrisons."

Ethan's face changed instantly.

There was only one other man with that name.

His godfather.

His late father's oldest business partner.

The man Ethan had called "Uncle Charles" since childhood.

The same man who had attended every birthday...

Every Christmas...

Every family vacation...

Mercer looked directly at Ethan.

"How much do you trust him?"

Ethan slowly sat down.

"I trusted him enough..."

"...to make him chairman of my company."

The room fell silent once again.

Because if Lucas's final message was true...

The betrayal hadn't begun three years ago.

It had begun decades earlier.
