**Chapter 15 — The Last Birthday at Harrison Manor**

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 15 — A New Beginning
One year later, Harrison Manor looked very different.
The house was still beautiful, but it felt peaceful again.
The security cameras had been upgraded.
The business had recovered under Ethan's leadership.
Most importantly, laughter had returned.
Five-year-old Sophie raced through the living room wearing a bright birthday crown while her grandparents chased after her, pretending they couldn't catch her.
"You're too fast!" Grandpa laughed.
Sophie giggled.
"I'm going to win!"
Ethan watched from the dining room doorway with a genuine smile.
For the first time in a long time, that smile wasn't forced.
Agent David Mercer arrived with his wife and young son, carrying a wrapped birthday present.
"I figured this party might be safer than the last one," he joked.
Ethan laughed.
"I certainly hope so."
Everyone gathered around the birthday cake.
The room filled with music, conversation, and laughter.
There were no secrets hiding behind closed doors.
No lies waiting in the darkness.
Only family.
Emily wasn't there.
After the divorce, she had moved to another city to rebuild her life. She still shared custody of Sophie and had worked hard to become a better mother. Although Ethan could never rebuild the marriage, he chose not to fill his daughter's childhood with bitterness.
That afternoon, Sophie ran over and hugged him tightly.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are you happy again?"
Ethan looked around the room.
His parents were laughing.
His grandfather was telling another impossible story.
Friends filled the house with warmth instead of suspicion.
He knelt and hugged Sophie.
"I am."
She smiled.
"I knew you would be."
Later that evening, after the guests had gone home, Ethan walked into his study and opened a small wooden memory box.
Inside rested an old wedding photograph, a faded birthday invitation, and the Swiss watch his father had given him years before.
He looked at the photograph one final time.
Then he gently closed the lid.
Some memories deserved to stay exactly where they belonged.
In the past.
Ethan switched off the study light and walked back toward the sound of Sophie's laughter echoing through the house.
For the first time in years...
Home finally felt like home again.
