**Chapter 4 — The Family Begins Asking Questions**

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 4 — One Question Emily Couldn't Answer

The front door clicked shut behind Lucas.

Silence settled over Harrison Manor once again.

The birthday decorations remained exactly where they had been placed earlier that afternoon. Balloons floated gently near the ceiling. The candles on the cake had burned themselves out, leaving thin trails of smoke curling into the air.

Emily stood in the middle of the living room, unable to look at her husband.

Ethan slowly loosened his tie.

He suddenly looked older than he had that morning.

Not because of exhaustion.

Because of heartbreak.

Finally, he spoke.

"I only want one honest answer."

Emily nodded through her tears.

"Anything."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"When you left this morning..."

"Were you already planning to spend your birthday with Lucas?"

Emily froze.

She wanted to say no.

She wanted to tell him everything had happened unexpectedly.

But she couldn't.

Because the truth was much worse.

She had canceled dinner with her friends three days earlier.

She had booked a luxury restaurant for herself and Lucas.

She had lied to Ethan before the day had even begun.

The silence answered for her.

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I understand."

"No..."

Emily cried.

"You don't."

"Then help me."

He looked at her again.

"Because right now..."

"I don't understand anything."

Emily walked toward him.

"It started as friendship."

"I was lonely."

"You were always working."

"I felt invisible."

Ethan listened quietly.

When she finished, he asked only one question.

"So instead of talking to your husband..."

"You chose my best friend?"

Emily couldn't answer.

Again.

The silence hurt more than any confession.

Ethan reached into his pocket and removed his wedding ring.

He stared at it for several seconds.

The ring had never left his finger since the day they were married.

Slowly...

He placed it on the dining table.

Emily gasped.

"Ethan..."

He shook his head.

"I'm not filing for divorce tonight."

"I'm not throwing you out."

"I'm simply taking off something that doesn't mean the same thing anymore."

Emily broke down completely.

She fell to her knees.

"I'm so sorry."

He looked at her with exhausted eyes.

"I believe you."

She looked up hopefully.

"But being sorry..."

"...doesn't undo three years."

Before either of them could speak again...

Emily's phone vibrated.

The screen lit up.

Lucas Calling.

Both of them looked at the phone.

Neither said a word.
