Chapter 13 - THE CAMERA BEHIND THE FRAME
The digital frame yielded thirty-two motion thumbnails.
Police arranged them chronologically.
Victoria checking the driveway camera.
Victoria tearing the blouse.
Victoria dropping the photograph.
Victoria striking her cheek.
Daniel entering the living room from the study.
Daniel reacting with confusion.
Noah watching through the bedroom door.
Then the system went dark.
The sequence matched Noah’s original statement.
Victoria could no longer claim he saw only the end.
The small camera behind the frame had not captured sound.
The recorder beneath the sofa had.
Ryan gave it to police unopened.
Victoria accused him of betraying their marriage.
“You recorded me without permission.”
“Noah recorded you.”
“He is a child.”
“He is also the person you frightened into changing his testimony.”
The recorder contained several files.
The first captured the satisfied laugh Noah heard.
The second contained Victoria’s call with Julian Mercer.
The third was longer.
It began before Daniel arrived.
Julian asked whether the transfer documents were ready.
Victoria said Ryan would sign after the confrontation.
“How?”
“He will be too angry to read.”
“And Daniel?”
“I’ll accuse him. Ryan will remove him.”
“What about Noah?”
“He is in his room.”
“He sees everything.”
“He knows what happens when he disobeys.”
Ryan stopped the recording.
His hands shook.
Victoria attempted to take the device.
He stepped away.
“What happens when Noah disobeys?”
“Nothing.”
“You said he knows.”
“It was an expression.”
“Was touching your sleeve an expression too?”
Victoria’s face became still.
Ryan had seen the signal during the hearing.
He understood now.
“You told him to change his story.”
“No.”
“Then why did he look at your sleeve before saying he was confused?”
“He is manipulating you.”
Ryan laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Everyone who tells the truth is manipulating me.”
Victoria looked toward the entrance.
Police vehicles were approaching.
Julian Mercer had been arrested after attempting to leave Arizona.
He carried forged trust documents.
Ryan’s signature appeared on every page.
The final document transferred control of Noah’s education fund and twelve percent of Carter Holdings to Victoria.
Ryan did not remember signing it.
The date was the night of the staged assault.
Victoria had prepared the pages.
The accusation was not simply meant to remove Daniel emotionally.
