THE BOY KNEW THE TRUTH / Chapter 8 / 25

Chapter 8 - THE MARK ON THE WOODEN DOOR

Noah returned from school and found the nail missing.

He took a photograph of the empty hole.

Victoria saw him.

“What are you doing?”

“Homework.”

“With the door?”

“Measuring things.”

She reached for his phone.

Noah stepped away.

Victoria’s voice lowered.

“Give it to me.”

Ryan entered the hallway.

“What’s happening?”

Victoria smiled.

“Noah was photographing private areas of the house again.”

“It’s a door.”

“He needs boundaries.”

Ryan looked at his son.

“Why did you take the picture?”

Noah could not reveal the memory card.

Not yet.

“The nail is gone.”

Ryan examined the hole.

“Who removed it?”

Victoria folded her arms.

“It was dangerous.”

“You didn’t mention it yesterday.”

“I noticed it this morning.”

Noah looked at Ryan.

“She removed it after the police left.”

“You didn’t see that.”

“I heard the toolbox.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Now sounds make me guilty?”

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

Every answer produced another contradiction.

He wanted one clear fact.

Noah provided it.

“The family picture recorded her.”

Everyone became still.

“What?” Victoria asked.

Noah pointed toward the largest photograph on the living-room wall.

A digital security unit sat behind it.

Daniel installed it after a burglary two years earlier.

The camera was designed to monitor the front windows without being visible.

Victoria had forgotten it existed.

Ryan removed the photograph.

A small lens faced the living room.

Its indicator was dark.

Victoria recovered.

“It hasn’t worked in years.”

Ryan opened the security application.

The camera appeared offline.

Its last recording was two days earlier.

Before the staged accusation.

Noah shook his head.

“The light was on.”

Victoria looked at him.

“When?”

“When you were waiting for Dad.”

Ryan felt the room tighten.

He checked the device logs.

Someone disabled it seven minutes before he entered the mansion.

The administrator account belonged to Victoria.

She claimed the system shut down automatically.

Ryan searched further.

At the same time, the main living-room microphones were muted.

The front-door camera remained active.

It showed Daniel arriving twenty minutes earlier.

He entered calmly.

No raised voice.

No forced entry.

Then the recording skipped.

Seven minutes vanished before Ryan came home.

Victoria stood beside the glass coffee table.

“You see? There is no video.”

Ryan looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

His voice was quiet.

“There is evidence someone made certain there would be no video.”
