Chapter 20 - THE PROTECTIVE ORDER HEARING

Victoria requested a permanent protective order against Daniel.
If granted, he could not contact Ryan or Noah.
He would also be suspended from decisions involving the family trust.
Her petition repeated the original story.
Daniel attacked her.
Noah saw only the aftermath.
Ryan reacted as any husband would.
But the evidence had changed.
The torn silk.
The door.
The thumbnails.
The missing seven minutes.
The recorder.
Julian’s testimony.
Victoria’s attorney focused on Daniel’s motive.
He wanted control of Noah’s shares.
Daniel answered:
“I requested independent trustees.”
“You still froze the accounts.”
“To prevent further withdrawals.”
“You involved police before speaking privately with your family.”
“I spoke privately. Victoria staged an assault.”
The judge reviewed Daniel’s medical evaluation.
Competent.
Nonviolent.
No history of aggression.
Then Ryan testified.
Victoria looked at him as though the marriage still gave her influence.
“Did you see your father attack me?” her attorney asked.
“No.”
“Did you see my client immediately afterward?”
“Yes.”
“Was she distressed?”
“She appeared distressed.”
“Did you believe she had been attacked?”
“Yes.”
Victoria’s expression softened.
Then Ryan continued.
“That belief was based on a scene she created.”
Her face hardened.
The attorney asked whether Daniel pressured him to change his story.
“No.”
“Then why did you?”
“I finally examined evidence instead of loyalty.”
The judge asked Noah whether he wanted to speak.
He appeared by private video with counselor Evelyn Price.
Victoria watched him.
Noah noticed her fingers moving toward the burgundy cuff.
This time, she stopped herself.
The signal had been exposed.
Noah spoke.
“My mom tore her shirt.”
“Did anyone tell you to say that?”
“No.”
“Why did you change your story at the previous hearing?”
“She said Dad would lose everything.”
“Were you confused?”
“No.”
“Were you frightened?”
“Yes.”
The judge looked toward Victoria.
Noah continued:
“Being scared changed what I said. It didn’t change what I saw.”
The protective order was denied.
A temporary order protecting Noah from Victoria was granted instead.
She could not contact him outside supervised sessions.
Victoria stood.
“That child has been manipulated.”
Noah heard her through the video feed.
He looked directly toward the camera.
“No.”
May you like
His voice no longer trembled.
“I stopped being manipulated.”
