Chapter 9 - DANIEL LEAVES THE MANSION

Daniel rented a small house near Noah’s school.
Ryan had told him to stay away from the mansion.
Daniel respected the boundary while challenging the protective order Victoria requested.
He did not contact Noah secretly.
He did not ask the child to choose sides.
Instead, he wrote one letter.
You do not have to protect me. Tell the truth because it belongs to you.
He sent it through the school counselor.
Victoria attempted to block delivery.
Evelyn Price refused.
Noah read the letter inside her office.
He removed the hidden memory card from his sweater.
“I recorded something.”
Evelyn placed it inside a sealed envelope.
“Do you know what is on it?”
“My mom talking to a man.”
“Did she know you recorded her?”
“No.”
“Are you afraid she will find out?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn contacted the police.
Before officers arrived, Victoria appeared at the school.
She demanded Noah leave with her.
The counselor said he was speaking to child services.
Victoria’s expression remained calm.
“Why?”
“Noah requested help.”
“He is being influenced by Daniel.”
“Daniel has not entered the school.”
“He sent a letter.”
“The letter explicitly told Noah not to protect him.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened.
She understood she could not portray the letter as coaching.
Ryan arrived minutes later.
Victoria told him Daniel had manipulated the school.
Ryan looked at Noah.
“What do you want?”
The boy clutched his blue sweater.
“I want to stay with Grandpa tonight.”
Victoria turned toward him.
“No.”
Ryan noticed the automatic answer.
He asked again.
“Noah, why?”
“Because Mom knows I recorded her.”
Victoria’s face lost color.
Ryan looked from his son to his wife.
“Recorded what?”
Noah did not answer.
A police officer entered.
Evelyn gave him the sealed envelope.
Victoria moved forward.
“That belongs to our family.”
The officer held it away.
“It may relate to an active investigation.”
Ryan stared at Victoria.
“What is on that card?”
She recovered quickly.
“Private marital conversations.”
Noah finally spoke.
“No.”
His voice trembled.
“It’s about my money.”
Ryan stopped.
Noah continued:
“And Mom said Grandpa had to be gone before you signed something.”
Victoria reached for him.
Noah moved behind the counselor.
Ryan saw the fear clearly.

This time, he could not explain it as Daniel’s influence.
Daniel was nowhere in the building.
