Chapter 14 - THE MISSING SEVEN MINUTES

The camera system was disabled for exactly seven minutes.

Police reconstructed the gap using other devices.

The front-door camera showed Daniel arriving.

A kitchen sensor recorded Victoria opening a drawer.

The wooden-door alarm registered contact.

The glass table detected an impact when the photograph fell.

Ryan’s car connected to the mansion’s network.

Then Victoria screamed.

Each event created a timestamp.

Together, they built a timeline.

Daniel entered before Victoria began staging the scene.

That surprised everyone.

He had been inside the study.

The living-room thumbnail showed him only after the noise began.

Daniel explained.

Victoria invited him to review Noah’s trust records.

When he arrived, she directed him to the study.

The records were missing.

While he searched, Victoria prepared the living room.

Daniel heard the photograph break and entered.

She immediately screamed.

The plan required him to appear suddenly from another room when Ryan opened the door.

Victoria had arranged his position.

Ryan had interpreted it exactly as she intended.

Detectives searched the study.

They found a second set of trust statements hidden beneath the desk.

The withdrawals were labeled educational consulting.

The company receiving them belonged to Julian Mercer’s sister.

Daniel had discovered the first transfer months earlier.

He asked Victoria for an explanation.

She delayed.

Then she began telling Ryan that Daniel suffered memory problems.

At dinner, Daniel repeated a story.

Victoria exchanged a worried glance with Ryan.

Daniel misplaced his glasses.

Victoria found them inside the refrigerator.

Daniel never put them there.

A housekeeper later admitted Victoria asked her to move them.

The story of cognitive decline had been constructed one incident at a time.

Ryan remembered every worried conversation.

Victoria did not begin with a dramatic accusation.

She prepared him gradually.

By the night of the living-room scene, Ryan was ready to interpret Daniel’s confusion as illness and his defense as denial.

The missing seven minutes were not the start of the deception.

They were the final performance.

Ryan went to Daniel’s temporary house.

“I believed her because she had been teaching me how to see you.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You still chose.”

“Yes.”

Ryan did not ask for forgiveness.

“I chose before I listened to you or Noah.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is the part you have to repair.”

Ryan looked toward the chessboard where Noah had left one piece standing.

The king.

Every other piece surrounded it.

But the smallest pawn had been moved to the center.

Noah knew the truth.

The adults had simply made it dangerous to say.
