Chapter 9 - “DANIEL SIGNED THEM TOO”Vanessa’s strongest defense wasn't about Richard.

It was Daniel.

She handed him two budget approvals bearing his electronic signature.

“You signed.”

“I approved totals.”

“You signed.”

“You told me bids were compliant.”

“You didn't read.”

“I trusted you.”

She laughed.

“That’s your defense?”

Daniel went silent.

It was same thing he accused Diane in another story? Not relevant.

Trust without review.

Vanessa continued:

“If Arden process was bad, your name is on it.”

“Yes.”

“Then maybe Richard’s audit wasn’t just about me.”

“It included me.”

“But you were never going to lose your position.”

“Maybe not.”

“Exactly.”

Power asymmetry.

Vanessa faced removal.

Daniel faced “oversight recommendations.”

She resented.

Not justification.

Context.

Daniel accepted board governance review.

He voluntarily recused from decisions related audit.

That frustrated Vanessa.

She wanted him defensive alongside her.

Instead he separated.

His mistake:

signing without reading.

Her mistake:

misrepresenting bid/conflict.

Different.

Board could hold both.

Richard too:

failure to establish clear procurement earlier.

System.

Vanessa’s isolation increased.

Then she told Brooke:

“Daniel is choosing Richard.”

Brooke corrected:

“He is choosing process.”

Vanessa:

“Same.”

There.

Pattern.

She viewed neutrality as betrayal.

If Daniel did not automatically side, he sided against.

That explained staged accusation as loyalty test perhaps.

Then Mason’s testimony remained.

Vanessa's second version still strained.

If Richard grabbed upper arm, why no immediate accusation of grab? She used sexualized “take advantage.”

Maybe to maximize.

Mason saw deliberate button tearing.

She said panic.

Then board memo.

Then texts.

Cumulative.

Brooke told her privately:

“We may need adjust factual posture.”

“What means?”

“Stop denying anything independently provable.”

Vanessa stared.

“Are you saying confess?”

May you like

“I’m saying credibility dies one unnecessary denial at time.”

This set future confession.
