Chapter 14 - THE DASHCAM RECORDING
Michael’s dashcam captured more than anyone realized.
The video faced the street.
The garden remained outside the frame.
But the cruiser’s side mirror reflected part of the white fence.
Technicians enlarged the reflection.
The image was small.
Distorted.
But visible.
Madison stood above Ethan.
Her arm was raised.
Ethan was pressed against the fence.
Rebecca stood between them.
Then Michael left the cruiser.
The audio played.
Stop! Don’t touch my son!
Madison lowered her hand before turning toward him.
The reflection proved Michael had responded to an immediate threat.
Captain Ward cleared him of misconduct.
His badge was returned.
Michael did not put it on immediately.
He looked at Ethan.
“The department says I can go back tomorrow.”
“Do you want to?”
“Yes.”
“Even after they believed Madison?”
Michael considered the question.
“The investigation was necessary. The outside pressure was not.”
He explained that a badge did not make an officer automatically right.
Evidence still mattered.
But power should never determine whose evidence received attention.
Michael returned to duty the next morning.
He wore the same dark navy uniform.
Ethan watched the police cruiser pull away.
For the first time, he did not feel responsible.
At the Collins mansion, Grant received notice of the expanded investigation.
His security company could be charged with destroying evidence.
Madison could face attempted assault and witness tampering.
Grant blamed her.
“If you had let Ava accept the apology, this would be over.”
Madison stared at him.
“If you had deleted the cloud cache properly, this would be over.”
Ava recorded the argument from the hallway.
Her tablet remained hidden inside her backpack.
Grant saw the pink case reflected in a mirror.
He opened the door.
Ava ran.
She reached the top of the stairs before Madison caught her.
“Give me the tablet.”
“No.”
Madison pulled at the backpack.
Ava held on.
“You are ruining this family.”
“You did that.”
Grant took the tablet.
Before he could unlock it, Ava pressed one button.
The video uploaded to her school account.
A confirmation appeared.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Grant looked at the screen.
May you like
Then at his daughter.
For the first time, Ava saw fear on both of her parents’ faces.
